Disney's Wide World Of Sports
Complex Picks Slippery Rock University's Shannon Munday For
Athletic Training Internship
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Disneys Wide World of Sports selected Slippery Rock
University athletic training graduate Shannon Munday of Rew for one
of its two spring internships in Orlando, Fla. Munday, who
graduated Dec. 13, will assess injuries to baseball, softball and
lacrosse players.
The 200-acre Disney complex is one
of the worlds premier sports destinations, also offering
golf, volleyball, martial arts, soccer and track and field. It
sponsors sporting competitions and an annual marathon for athletes
from around the country. Athletic trainers provide initial injury
assessment at events.
Munday (Otto-Eldred Jr/Sr High
School) qualified for the internship after Disney officials
evaluated her academics and conducted a phone interview. Munday
graduated with a 3.3 grade-point average. After her internship, she
plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.
Being selected for this
internship is a great honor in itself considering the fact that
only two students nationwide are selected, Munday
said. Its a great testimony to the quality of
athletic training education at SRU. Without the knowledge and
skills that I've learned from my professors, this honor probably
never would've happened.
The Disney experience will give her
the opportunity to grow as an athletic trainer, preparing
me to work on my own, she said. I'm looking forward
to the new environment in which I'll be working in, and also the
chance to meet others in my profession.
Shannon is an excellent
student academically, which is an obvious asset, said
Bonnie Siple, assistant professor of exercise and rehabilitative
sciences. She is also an excellent clinician who has been
able to take her classroom knowledge and transfer it skillfully to
her hands-on work with our athletes. She will be a very successful
certified athletic trainer one day very soon.
