JAZZ
KNIGHTS FROM WEST POINT TO PERFORM AT SLIPPERY ROCK
UNIVERSITY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will host the
United States Military Academy Band’s Jazz Knights from West
Point in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday [Feb. 8] in Swope Music
Hall.
The
concert, including big-band, patriotic and popular music, is free
and open to the public.
For
more than 30 years the Jazz Knights have brought musical excellence
and variety to audiences by presenting the best of big-band jazz.
Members are graduates of some of America’s finest music
schools and were recruited and selected through a competitive
audition.
The
band has played with Benny Goodman at Lincoln Center, with the Duke
Ellington Orchestra for the 200th anniversary of the New
York State Legislature and has twice appeared at the Hatch Shell
for Boston’s Fourth of July celebration.
At
West Point, the band provides music for numerous cadet social
functions throughout the year and in combination with the military
academy’s concert band and Hellcats (drum and bugle field
music unit) helps fulfill official musical requirements of the
academy and the U.S. Army, including military and patriotic
ceremonies both at West Point and other nearby
locations.
The
campus visit was arranged by Dr. Stephen Hawk, associate professor
of music.
