Coach pins rivals, wins 400th team wrestling meet

Charles "Chuck" Tursky, a 1980 Slippery Rock University graduate and the wrestling coach at Kiski Area High School, recently won his 400th career victory as a coach. The victory ranks him second in Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League history.

"I'm a bit startled when I say the number 400, but it's a great feeling when you're getting praised for something you love to do," Tursky told the Valley News Dispatch. "I'm receiving these wins, but it came with a lot of help - a great staff, great kids."

Tursky has been involved with wrestling for more than 30 years, first at Riverside High School and then at SRU, where he lettered all four years.

He started his coaching career at Burrell High School, where his teams won nearly 50 meets in seven seasons. In his 23 years at Kiski Area, the Cavaliers have gone 354-57-1, a .861 winning percentage.

Following the 2002-03 season, Tursky was named the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was inducted into the WPIAL Southwest Region and PIAA halls of fame.
