'Cherry Pie Hike' steps off from SRU's Old Stone House
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Old Stone House will celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington, with its annual "Cherry Pie Hike" at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The free, public program will take hikers along the North Country Trail and will include free cherry pie.
Aaron Cowan, Old Stone House curator and history professor at SRU, will present "Beyond the Cherry Tree: George Washington and Early Americans' Complicated Relationship with Nature" as a short talk as part of the hike. The "Cherry Pie Hike" will cover a brief portion of the trail.
The North Country Trail, one of only 11 National Scenic Trails designated by Congress, stretches from North Dakota to eastern New York. With a walking distance of more than 4,000 miles, it is the longest of the trails.
The Old Stone House is a well-known landmark on the trail's route through Butler County.
Visitors are invited to a complimentary cherry pie and coffee reception before the hike and an optional dinner at the North Country Brewery in Slippery Rock after the hike.
The hike is free, but pre-registration is required. To register call John Stehle, president of the Butler Outdoor Club, at 724.256.0674 or Dan Mourer, president of the North County Trail Association, Butler Chapter, at 724.445.3315.
The event is co-sponsored by the Butler Outdoor Club, a partner in the North Country Trail Association, an organization of volunteers who maintain and promote the trail, the NCTA Butler Chapter, North Country Brewing Co. and the Old Stone House.
The Old Stone House, managed by SRU, is located at the intersection of route 8, route 173, and route 528, 12 miles north of Butler, Pennsylvania. Additional information about the Butler County landmark is available at: www.oldstonehousePA.org.
