SRU's Amnesty International chapter shines spotlight on
Darfur
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University chapter
of Amnesty International will focus the spotlight on the
conflict-ridden Darfur region of western Sudan when it presents
"Genocide: The Crisis in Darfur" the week of Feb. 26-March 3.
The
weeklong series is designed to increase awareness about the region,
which has been ripped with conflict between rival military groups
since 2003. Many claim local and regional governments are fueling
the carnage in order to gain control of the area. Up to 2.5 million
people are believed to have been displaced by the fighting, which
has been labeled both "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide."
The
week includes a multi-university summit at 9 a.m. March 3 with a
keynote address by Phil Wilhelm. Wilhelm works in Washington, D.C.,
with an organization focused on genocide. He just returned from
several months in the region. Following his address,
participants will break into discussion groups. A panel, including
participants from 16 regional colleges and universities, will meet
after lunch to offer further discussion.
The
week's activities include:
- Monday: "Darfur Diaries," a documentary, at 7 p.m.,
Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium.
- Tuesday: A "Peace Party" with games, 6-8 p.m.,
University Union.
 Wednesday: A
faculty panel discussing "Genocide in Darfur" at 7 p.m. in the
Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium. Heather Frederick,
assistant professor of political science, will moderate.
- Thursday: A candlelight vigil, 7 p.m., Bailey Library
Quad.
- Saturday: A Darfur Summit, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the
