Stephens named PSAC-Western Division
men's basketball 'Player of the Year'
Denell Stephens, Slippery Rock University senior forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., was recently named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men's basketball "Player of the Year." He also earned second-team All-Atlantic Region honors from the region's sports information directors.
Kyle Camper, a senior, point guard from Salisbury, Md., the NCAA all-division leader and conference record-setter in assists this winter, was named to second-team All-PSAC-West and second-team Daktronics all-region honors.
The duo was honored for their efforts in helping lead The Rock to a 21-8 final record overall, a second-place finish in the PSAC-West final standings and a berth in the conference semifinals. The team was under direction of first-year head coach Kevin Reynolds.
Stephens was the first Slippery Rock University player to earn the Western Division "Player of the Year" honor since Myron Brown in 1991. Stephens is the first Rock men's basketball player to earn a first-team All-PSAC-West honor since Jerome Davis in 2000-01.
The selection of Stephens and Camper as All-PSAC-West performers marks the third straight season and fifth time in the last six seasons that SRU has had at least one player named to all-conference honors.
Behind the leadership of Stephens and Camper, The Rock showed a 300 percent improvement in victories over last winter's seven-win season and recorded SRU's first winning season since 1999-2000. The Rock also earned a berth in the PSAC postseason tournament for the first time since 2000 and hosted a PSAC tournament game for the first time since 1991.
The 2008-09 season also marked the first time since 1990-91 an SRU men's team recorded 20 or more victories and this winter's win total was two shy of the school record shared by three teams.
