SRU student attending University Presidential Inauguration Conference
Shardea Croes, a sophomore exercise science major at Slippery Rock University from San Nicolas, Aruba, will be among the participants in the University Presidential Inauguration Conference next week in Washington, D.C.
Croes, who earned second-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division honors last spring as a member of The Rock softball team, earned her invitation by achieving a high SAT score and through her participation as an ambassador for Aruba at the Global Young Leaders Conference last April.
"I am very honored and proud to be able to represent my country and Slippery Rock University," Croes said of her impending, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
As a member of the Inaugural Scholars group, Croes will participate in the pageantry and ceremony of Tuesday's inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, and the inauguration of Vice President-elect Joseph Biden.
The UPIC, which runs Saturday through Wednesday, "is comprised of exclusive and private inaugural events and activities featuring world-renowned keynote speakers and political experts, as well as public ceremonial events, such as the official swearing-in ceremony and the inaugural parade."
The participating Inaugural Scholars, including Croes, will meet and interact with White House veterans, press secretaries, political powerhouses, Washington, D.C., insiders, presidential historians, policy-makers, documentary filmmakers and other prominent personalities and political experts, according to UPIC promotional items.
Among the dignitaries participating are Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), who is a former U.S. Secretary of State and founder of the America's Promise Alliance, and former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore.
