SRU baseball coach earns Butler Sports Hall of Fame spot
Jeff Messer, Slippery Rock University head baseball coach, will be one of seven members of the Class of 2009 inducted April 25 into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Messer, who is in his 24th season as The Rock's head coach, leads active Pennsylvania college baseball coaches in victories. He currently owns a 745-425-4 career record.
Messer-coached Rock teams have won four NCAA Division II regional championships -- 1989, 1997, 2000 and 2003 - two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles and 15 PSAC-Western Division crowns. His Green and White squads have also claimed two regional runner-up honors and a pair of PSAC runners-up trophies. He has been the recipient of 10 PSAC "Coach of the Year" awards.
His 2009 squad will take a 21-9 overall record into Saturday's game at Lock Haven University. The Rock is 7-5 and in fourth place in PSAC-Western Division action.
Originally from Massachusetts, Messer is the only member of this year's induction class who is not a Butler County area native.
