Papa, Hendershot earn top regional honors
John Papa, Slippery Rock University head track and field coach, and sophomore Whitney Hendershot from Salamanca, N.Y., have earned top regional honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their efforts during the 2008-09 indoor season.
Papa was named the Atlantic Region "Women's Coach of the Year" after guiding The Rock to its third consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship. Under Papa, three individual athletes were accepted into the NCAA Division II National Championships, which will take place Friday and Saturday at the University of Houston.
Under his tutelage, The Rock women broke all three indoor relay school records at the PSAC Championships and a total of eight school records throughout the 2008-09 season.
The conference title was the 20th PSAC championship of Papa's career, including women's titles in 10 outdoor seasons, three indoor seasons and one cross country season, as well as men's titles in four outdoor seasons, one indoor season and one cross country season.
Hendershot was named the Atlantic Region "Female Field Athlete of the Year."
In just her second collegiate indoor season, Hendershot established herself as one of the top athletes in the nation by posting the best mark in Division II in the high jump with a clearance of 1.76 meters (5-09.25).
She cleared that same height during the pentathlon at the PSAC Championships en route to winning the event with a school record performance of 3,505 points, the 14th best in the nation this season. For her efforts, she was named the "Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet."
Hendershot will compete in the high jump at the National Championships this weekend. She will be joined by Lacey Cochran of Freeport in the 400-meter dash and Jenn Harpp of Highland Heights, Ohio, in the 5,000-meter run. Jeff Weiss from Avella will represent The Rock men's program and will compete in the mile.
