SRU's Papa, Labor earn top coach honors in Atlantic Region - again
NEW ORLEANS - John Papa, Slippery Rock University's head track and field coach, was named Tuesday as the Atlantic Region Women's Coach of the Year and assistant coach Dave Labor was named the Assistant Coach of the Year, by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The award marks the second consecutive year The Rock coaching duo has swept the women's top regional honors.
Papa, who was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Atlantic Region coach of the year last outdoor season and this indoor season, earned the honor after guiding The Rock women to their fourth consecutive PSAC Championship, a top regional ranking and a fifth-place finish in the final NCAA Division II national poll.
The honor is Papa's 15th Regional Coach of the Year award in his 22 years at the helm of the SRU program.
The Rock women will send eight athletes to the National Championships this week. The team claimed its fourth straight outdoor PSAC title and the eighth in the last 11 years. The title is the 23rd overall conference championship for Papa.
Labor earns his second consecutive regional honor after leading a standout group of sprinters and hurdlers during the outdoor season. Four of Labor's athletes combined to score 85 points on the final day of the PSAC Championships, propelling the team to its fourth title.
Labor's athletes swept the top-two places in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, won both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays, placed second and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in both the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes.
The Rock will close the 2009 season today thru Saturday at the National Championships, hosted by San Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Complete meet information, including a schedule and heat sheets, is available on SASU's Web site: www.angelosports.com.
