Women's rugby club at SRU advances to Elite 8

The women's rugby club at Slippery Rock University defeated the University of Wyoming today in the College Division II Women's National Championships in Orlando, Fla. The team now advances to the Elite 8 and will play the University of Delaware at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for a chance at making the Final Four.

The club beat Wyoming 46-22. SRU player Dailyn Cooney scored three goals. Mandi Miller scored one and converted three kicks, while Stephanie Gillespie, Lindsey Amodei and Katie Maurer and Laura Malinak each scored one goal.

The club qualified for the tournament for the first time in SRU history after posting a 9-0 record during the fall regular season in the First Allegheny Rugby Union league.     Twenty-three players made the trip to Florida.             If the team beats Delaware, it will play an undetermined opponent at Stanford University in the Final 4.
