Black Enterprise Magazine names SRU graduate's business to Top 100
Charles Sanders, a 1986 Slippery Rock University graduate, and his wife, Elisa, have had their Pittsburgh-based business, Urban Settlement Services Inc., ranked as one of the Top Black Businesses in the country by Black Enterprise Magazine.
The listing, included in the magazine's June issue, ranks the Sanders' company at No. 82 in the industrial/service category. Sanders serves as the company's chief executive officer.
Urban Settlement Services is a national vendor management firm employing appraisers, closing agents and abstractors and calls itself a "champion supplier in the loan processing industry."
Sanders' firm, stated in 1988 as a two-person operation, now directly employs 105 at its Allegheny Center and Penn Hills Office. Its expanded employment numbers list more than 500, including subcontractors throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Southeast regions. The company also has offices in Charlotte, N.C., and Denver, Colo., with satellite offices in Georgia, Maryland, California and Washington.
The company's revenues topped $50 million in 2008, making the firm the second largest black-owned business in the commonwealth - and possibly the largest minority-owned settlement service company in the U.S. The firm is certified by the National Minority Supplier Development Council as a Minority Business Enterprise.
Elisa Sanders, the company's co-founder, serves as human resource executive.
Charles Sanders, who majored in business administration and played football under coach Don Ault while at SRU, went on to play in the National Football League, with stints at the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers. He later was active with the Pittsburgh Piranhas. He was among the early supporters of SRU's "Locker Room of Champions" project, and in 1997 was named to the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame.
He used his experience to help establish the "Join a Team Not a Gang," inner-city youth program before founding SASS and often serves as a motivational speaker. He is working with his Chuck Sanders Charities supporting existing organizations, churches, youth groups and sports organizations. He also supports historically black colleges and universities.
Sanders is an active member of the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council and Macedonia Baptist Church. He also supports the Homewood Youths Association.
