Stephens receives PSAC-West 'Player of the Week' honor

Slippery Rock University senior forward Denell Stephens from Brooklyn, N.Y., was recognized for his stellar efforts last week by being named Monday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division "Player of the Week" in basketball.

Stephens averaged 29.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in two division games last week to lead The Rock to wins over California University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst that gave the Green and White sole possession of fourth place in the division standings.

A 6-foot-3 player also shot an impressive 76.7 percent (23-for-30) from the field and averaged 3.5 steals per game.

Against California, he recorded his 11th "double-double" of the season with 30 points and 12 rebounds. He followed up with 29 points, five rebounds and four steals against Mercyhurst.

The "Player of the Week" honor is Stephens' second of the season and The Rock's third this winter. He was also selected as last Dec. 2nd's award winner. One week earlier, teammate Maron Brown was named as the division's "Player of the Week."

The Rock men take a 14-7 overall record and 5-3 division mark into an 8 p.m. home game Wednesday against division-leading Gannon (18-2, 7-1). The SRU women play Gannon at 6 p.m. in Morrow Field House.

SRU is one game behind both Edinboro and Indiana University of Pennsylvania and enjoys a two-game lead over both California and Mercyhurst in the division standings.
