Don't lose-ical by missing 'Seussical' the musical play, activities

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - "Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss's best loved children's characters come alive on stage for "Seussical" in Slippery Rock University's Miller Auditorium 3 p.m. May 20. Tickets for "Seussical" are $10. Call 724-738-2091.

The musical caper features the Cat and the Hat as emcee, Horton the elephant and a hill of Whos in a whirling blur of color and motion. New York City's TheatreworksUSA shortened this version of the Broadway show to 60 minutes, making it suitable for children of all ages.

"It's very family oriented," said Deborah Baker, SRU manager of university events. "Dr. Seuss's darker themes have been eliminated. It's light and upbeat with great music."

"Seussical" also differs from the Broadway format in that it features 12 actors and enhanced sets and costumes, Baker said. The actors typically arrive early in the morning to set up scenery and prepare for the performance. The show features original songs.

As a bonus for ticket holders, the University is hosting additional Seuss-related activities earlier in the day. A Seussical Brunch will be from noon to 2 p.m. in the University Club in North Hall. The menu includes Green Eggs and Ham, Carved Roast Beast and Cat's Hat Flapjacks, as well as macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese and pizza.

Storytelling, creative drama and hands-on activities will take place concurrently in adjoining rooms. A huge variety of Dr. Seuss books will be available for purchase at the event.

"This is going to be a wonderful day for families. I'd certainly encourage all our ticket holders to plan to attend the brunch and other Seussical activities," Baker said.

All patrons holding tickets to the show will receive an invitation to attend the brunch and other "Seussical" activities. Separate tickets for the brunch and family fun-day activities are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.
