SRU softball player catches National Player of the Week Honor

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Jessica Kortz a Slippery Rock University health science and public health major from Charleston, W. Va., was named today as the Louisville Slugger Division II National Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She is the first SRU softball player to be named to the national honor.

Kortz earned the nation's top weekly honor after a dominant performance over a five-game stretch at the Salem Invitational last weekend.

The standout catcher/first baseman finished the tournament 8-for-11 at the plate with seven runs, 16 RBIs and five homeruns as she helped guide The Rock to a 3-2 week.

She slugged an astounding 2.091 for the week with a .727 batting average. Kortz also tallied a total of 23 bases and was walked three times. She was a perfect 8-for-8 over The Rock's final three games of the week, including four homeruns and a grand slam.

Kortz becomes the first player from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to be honored as the National Player of the Week this season. Monday, she was named the PSAC-Western Division Player of the Week.

The team is scheduled to play daily through April 3, except March 31. The next home game is at 3 p.m. Thursday at the SRU Softball Complex.
