SRU's history honorary captures Best Chapter Award

For the second year in a row, the Rho Iota Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary at Slippery Rock University, has received the Best Chapter Award for III Division colleges and universities.

In addition to the national recognition, the award includes $250 for the purchase of books for SRU's Bailey Library.

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.

"This achievement represents the latest in a long tradition of excellence for involving students on SRU's campus in historical discussion, research and publication, which has resulted in the local chapter's receipt of eight previous Best Chapter Awards between 1989 and 2000 and Honorable Mention Awards in 2003 and 2004," said Carlis White, SRU assistant professor of history and chapter adviser.

Among the activities sponsored by the local chapter are history film nights; trips to historically significant sites; staffing major functions at the Old Stone House, including the annual Haunted House Ghost Stories event; hosting a PAT Regional Conference; publishing "The Stone House Review," an annual journal of history and folklore; and assisting with functions sponsored by SRU's history department.

Students interested in joining the chapter's activities should contact White for further details at 724.738.4912.
