SRU garners spot on Top 20 list for rural U.S. colleges
WorldWideLearn, the world's premier online directory of education, has named Slippery Rock University No. 2 on its Top 20 Rural Colleges and Universities list released this week.
"Attending college at a rural school offers the best of all worlds - tons of outdoor activities, a small-town atmosphere, and a short drive to a big city," the report noted.
Those preparing the list said, "Attending college in a rural setting, where all activities seem to revolve around the school and its students, can give student a true college experience. Rural college campuses may also offer access to outdoor recreation activities while being located within easy driving distance of a larger metropolitan area for occasional excursion."
In describing The Rock, the report said, "Slippery Rock University is situated in picturesque Butler County, Pa., and is within driving distance of Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania campus, which was founded in 1889, is located in a gorgeous, historic rural setting."
Washington and Lee University in the Shenandoah Valley topped the list. The only other Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education university included was Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which ranked 12th..
Earlier this year, SRU was cited as one of the nation's safest campuses; it was honored as a "Great Place to Work" by the Chronicle of Higher Education; and was included on the Princeton Review's "Best Northeast College" and "Green Colleges" lists SRU was previously named one of the top five "Best Value" public institutions in the U.S., by Consumers Digest.
