SRU offers 'If You Give a Pig a Pancake & Other Story Books'
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Feast your eyes on "Fluffy the Guinea Pig," "Princess Elizabeth, " "Horace and Morris" and many other children's characters and delight as they come to life when Theatreworks USA presents the musical "If You Give a Pig a Pancake & Other Story Books" at 7 p.m. May 15 in Slippery Rock University's Miller Auditorium.
Seven classic storybooks - "If You Give a Pig a Pancake," "Dairy of a Worm," "Fluffy the Guinea Pig," "Horace and Morris But Mostly Dolores," "How I Became a Pirate, "Lilly's Big Day and the "Paper Bag Princess" will be condensed into a one-hour performance.
"It's going to be great fun for the whole family. Where else can you enjoy seven of your favorite stories in one musical?" said Deborah Baker, SRU director of special events. "For added fun, we are offering a pancake-themed dinner with creative drama, storytelling and hands-on activities for children."
"If You Give a Pig a Pancake & Other Story Books," recommended for ages 4 and up, is directed by Kevin Del Aguila, with choreography by Devanand Janki. Vaughn Patterson designed the scenery and props, with costumes by Anne-Marie Wright. The musical debuted in spring 2008 and has been touring since last fall.
Six Theatreworks USA actors will present adaptations of the stories, with various themes.
"Dairy of a Worm" shows that a wormy life is great but has its difficulties, such as wiggling across a playground. The audience will follow a worm's adventures as he writes about them in his diary.
"Fluffy the Classroom Guinea Pig" tells the story of Fluffy entering a best pets contest.
"Horace and Morris But Mostly Dolores" explores the friendship between three mice that join the Mega-Mice Club.
"How I Became a Pirate" follows young Jeremy Jacob's adventures as he sails away to be a pirate of no vegetables, no manners, no bedtime and no rules. But he soon discovers there is no place like home.
"If You Give a Pig a Pancake" shows the impact of a bossy pig's demands on a little girl in this lesson about cause and effect.
"Lilly's Big Day" focuses on stage fright and Lilly's role as a flower girl in her teacher's wedding.
"The Paper Bag Princess" tells of Princess Elizabeth donning a paper bag and coming to the rescue of her prince after a ferocious dragon smashes her castle.
The pancake dinner, sponsored by AVI Foodsystems, the SRU contact food vendor, will be offered from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Weisenfluh Dining Hall. Children will be able to build their own pancake stacks and cover them with syrup, whipped cream, sliced strawberries and chocolate chips.
Tickets for the musical are $8 and may be purchased at 724.738.2091. The dinner, separate from the musical, costs $6 for children and $10 for adults. Call 724.738.4245 for information.
