SRU education majors provide third graders movie, popcorn, fun

A crew of Slippery Rock University education majors undertaking their student-teaching work with Aliquippa School District third graders teamed up to make sure the student's hard work in preparing for the required Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exams did not go unrewarded.

According to a Beaver County Times news story, the SRU students organized a "Movie and Munchies" event that was a success with the youngsters.

For the past four years the school has offered a pre-exam event, but this year changed directions and brought in a motivational speaker.

The SRU students stepped up with the idea that the children also needed a reward, so they arranged for an estimated 100 students to read "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" followed by a showing of the movie version of the book. Popcorn and drinks were also donated.

"We all decided as a group that we really needed to do something for the children on behalf of Slippery Rock University," student teacher Stephanie Dunbar, an elementary education major from Jeannette, said.

Rachel Feits, a special education major from Rochester, said the teachers collaborated and sought donations from area businesses before planning the movie. As part of the event, students also decorated craft paper aprons.

The children involved called it "fun" and "good."

Dunbar said the pupils had seen the event occurring every year since kindergarten and had been looking forward to it.

"The children worked very hard this year," Lisa Dutkovich, assistant elementary principal, told the newspaper. "We appreciate Slippery Rock students caring enough for our students to celebrate."
