The 12-day Summer Visual Arts Academy,
hosted by Slippery Rock University, draws to a close on Friday
[July 18] with a 3 p.m. public performance in Swope Music Hall
showing off the skills and talents learned during the academy in
jazz, theater, dance and writing – both poetry and prose. The
program is designed to help students learn to integrate their
visual and performing art skills with today’s
state-of-the-art technology.
The academy, which offers high school
students two college credits at the college or university of their
choice, was open to students from throughout the western
Pennsylvania region, including students from
Pittsburgh.
Friday’s
performance will offer outstanding feature photo opportunities
– as well as interviews with some of the 112 participating
high school students. The program is sponsored by SRU, the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, the Office of Social
Equity, Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Regional Summer Schools of
Excellence and the Grable Foundation of
Pittsburgh.
The academy is under
the direction of SRU’s Dr. Joseph McCarren, a professor of
English. He may be reached at 724-738-2868 for those planning to
staff Friday’s closing performance.
