John A. Hicks appointed to PACT executive board
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - John A. Hicks, a Slippery Rock University graduate, current trustee and professor emeritus with more than 30 years of service to SRU, has been appointed to the executive board of the Pennsylvania Association of Council of Trustees.
Suzanne Vessella, SRU trustee chairperson, appointed Hicks. He replaces Orvan Peterson, a former trustee. The board includes one member from each of the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education institutions. The board organizes professional development conferences for the state system's 154 trustees, giving them insight into higher education issues.
It also manages PACT business and assists in planning and implementing policies providing higher education opportunities to students.
Hicks is known as "an advocate for public school teaching." He was a board member and served in leadership roles for the Association of Teacher Educators and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He once represented the ATE at its European conference in Belgium.
Hicks, a 1962 SRU graduate, retired from the College of Education in 2002. While at SRU, he served in several interim administrative positions, including dean, associate dean and director of continuing education. For his final 11 years, he was the assistant to the dean of education.
Hicks attended Brandeis University, John Carroll University, Kent State University and Penn State University. Before joining SRU, he was a teacher and coach in East Cleveland, where the Cleveland Wahoo Club named him "Coach of the Year."
Hick's wife Judy Keith Hicks, son John and daughter Laura also receive degrees from SRU. His son is a secondary education instructor at SRU. His daughter lives near Mt. Pocono.
