SRU
STUDENTS TO HOLD VOTER REGISTRATION RALLY
THURSDAY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A “Student Voter
Registration Drive Kick-Off Rally” will be held at Slippery
Rock University from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday [Sept. 2] in an effort
to promote the national “Your Vote, Your Voice”
campaign from the National Campus Voter Registration
Project.
The
registration project, to be held outside Rocky’s Grille in
the University Union, is part of the National Association of
Independent Colleges and Universities. Voter registration
information will be available in campus cafeterias throughout
September.
Sponsors
of the campus program include the SRU Student Government
Association, Young Democrats, College Republicans, University
Program Board, Student Union for Minority Affairs and the
Association of Residence Hall Students.
The
26th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in
1971, granted 18 year olds the right to vote. In 1998, Congress
mandated all college and universities make a good-faith effort to
distribute voter registration forms on campus.
Those
needing additional information should contact Dr. Paula Olivero,
interim assistant vice president for student development, or Dr.
Itzi Meztli, assistant professor of English.
