PHOTO CAPTION FOR SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY 9-11
MEMORIAL DEDICATION
NEW 9-11 MEMORIAL DEDICATED ON SRU CAMPUS:
More than 50 students, faculty, administrators and alumni gathered
today [Sept. 11] on the Slippery Rock University campus to dedicate
a 9-11 memorial given to the university through donations by the
class of 2004-05. The tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, took place
days after the arrival of that freshman class and continues to
serve as a unifying force. Here Lindsay Mcghee, former SRU Student
Government Association vice president for advancement, and SRU
President Robert Smith cut the ribbon to formally place the
monument designed by Sean Swihart, a Slippery Rock artist, and
fabricated at Sherman Welding and Fabricating located in Slippery
Rock. The memorial, located near the University Union, features
two, 10-foot tall, stainless-steel slabs representing the twin
towers of New York City’s World Trade Center, placed on a
five-sided base representing the Pentagon in Washington., D.C. A
large Flight 93 sign, symbolizing the flight that crashed outside
of Shanksville in western Pennsylvania, is part of the design along
with an American eagle. At night, two light beams, one from each
tower, project representing those who lost their lives in the 2001,
attacks.
