SRU student group hosts Meet Our Elected Officials program
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Students Organizing for America is bringing State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-10th, State Sen. Mary Jo White, R-21st, and U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, D-3rd, to campus to answer questions from students and discuss the importance of public service.
"The Meet Our Elected Officials" program is free and open to the public.
Gibbons and White will speak to students at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the University Room of North Hall. Dahlkemper will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium.
"It's a chance to come and meet your local representatives, talk about government and civil jobs," said Itzi Meztli, assistant professor of English and the group's adviser. "They're going to answer questions from students on a number of important issues, such as healthcare and student loans. We have four to six years to train our students to become civic minded. Democracy is participatory. You can't just sit it out. You should vote and learn about the issues."
