SRU JAZZ ENSEMBLE TO
SPOTLIGHT FRANK SINATRA IN SEMESTER’S OPENING
CONCERT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– A concert titled “Old Blue Eyes,”
offering a tribute to famed Big Band singer Frank Sinatra will open
Slippery Rock University’s Jazz Ensemble schedule, featuring
Stephen Ball, an SRU voice major from Slippery Rock, when it
performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday [Oct. 5] in the University
Union.
The 17-member
ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Stephen Hawk, associate
professor of music. Admission is $3 for the general public;
students are free.
Ball and the
ensemble will feature Sinatra’s “Come Fly with
Me,” “Summer Wind,” “The Way You Look
Tonight,” “The Lady is a Tramp” and “The
Best is Yet to Come.” Hawk explains the group will be using
original Nelson Riddle arrangements for the Sinatra
salute.
The concert will
also feature trumpeters Courtney Geary of Bellefonte, Will Weltman
of New Castle and Galen McKinney of Erie for a rendition of
“The Cool Ones.” Other selections scheduled are
“Hunting Wabbits” by Gordon Goodwin, “Bye Bye
Blues,” by Rob McConnell,” and Bob Mintzer’s
“Latin Dance.”
