EIGHT SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS COMPLETE

ARMY ROTC NATIONAL ADVANCED LEADERSHIP CAMP

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Eight Slippery Rock University students have graduated from the recent Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps National Advanced Leadership Camp held at Ft. Lewis, Wash., after taking part in what is often considered the single, most important training event in preparation for future commissioning as an Army officer.

Completing the 32-day camp that incorporated a range of subjects designed to develop and evaluate the cadets’ leadership ability were:

  • Russ Eury of Butler

  • Jeff Fields of New Brighton

  • Phil Gryskewicz of Evans City*

  • Laura Lubinski of Allison Park

  • Jeremy Linn of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

  • Derrell McBroom of East Pittsburgh

  • Stephenie Benedict of St. Marys

  • Neil Oberlin of Grove City

Army ROTC is the largest officer-producing organization within the American military, with approximately 75 percent of all officers in the U.S. Army receiving their commission through the program. Those completing the camp are now prepared for their senior year and subsequent commissioning as an Army officer following graduation.

The leadership camp training includes a series of exercises and evaluations that challenges each cadet individually and each platoon and regiment as a group. This dynamic training includes water safety, basic rifle marksmanship, machine gun, land navigation, fire support, hand grenade, tactical and physical training.

*After completing the camp, Gryskewicz went onto participate in the Army’s Cadet Troop Leadership Training, a a unique hands-on leadership experience held in Hawaii. As a participant he was assigned as a platoon leader in an active duty Army unit to learn and eventually perform the day-to-day duties of a second lieutenant.
