Educational Technology and Design (ETD) is a resource for faculty providing instructional design support, distance education resources and certification, educational technology training, LMS administration, and multimedia support.

Desire2Learn: Just the Basics -- Location: 007D BSB
This session will cover the basics of Desire2Learn (D2L). You'll learn how to save paper and reduce printing by sharing handouts and other documents with your students, view and email your class roster, and maintain a simple gradebook.

Writing Tools in D2L -- Location: 007D BSB
This session will focus on the Dropbox tool within D2L. You'll learn how to collect electronic copies of papers from students, as well as record feedback and grades. We'll also cover the advanced features of Turnitin (plagiarism detection) and electronic rubrics.

Creating Videos with SRU Mediaspace -- Location: 202 BL, Seminar Rm
Mediaspace is a special companion site to D2L that allows you to quickly and easy create and post multimedia content to your D2L courses. This session will show you how to use Mediaspace to upload existing video files, create webcam recordings, and narrated screen recordings.

Rich Online Discussion with VoiceThread -- Location: 007D BSB
VoiceThread is an online tool for educators wishing to add interactive elements to their narrated slideshow lectures. This session will show you how to use SRU's subscription to the VoiceThread service to add narrations to a PowerPoint show, post it to your D2L course, then add interactive discussion prompts that allow students to comment using audio and video.

Quizzes & Discussions -- Location: 007D BSB
Online, automatically-graded quizzes are a popular way to assess student learning in both online and face-to-face courses, and the D2L Discussions tool is a great way to extend student-student interaction and discussion outside of the classroom. This session will teach you how to create simple online quizzes in D2L, as well as explain how to set up online discussion forums in your D2L courses.

Virtual Classroom Skills with Blackboard Collaborate -- Location: WEB
Blackboard Collaborate is the "virtual classroom" or "webinar" software offered by SRU. BB Collaborate allows you to host live, synchronous online chat sessions with students from anywhere in the world. BB Collab allows the use of audio, webcam video, screen sharing, and PowerPoint slideshows.

Introduction to Desire2Learn

Description: For those new to using D2L. Topics include:

Dropbox & Discussions in D2L

Description:  Topics include:

  • Using the Dropbox Tool to Collect and Leave Feedback on Student Papers
  • Plagiarism Detection with TurnItIn
  • Rich Feedback with the Grademark Tool
  • Discussions

Methods for Lecture Capture and Online Instruction

Description: This workshop will demonstrate methods for capturing and posting lectures and instruction online. Tools for narrating PowerPoint presentations and recording videos and screencasts, such as iSpring and Voicethread, will be covered. 

Quizzing in Desire2Learn

Description: This workshop will exam the many facets of the Quizzes tool. Topics include:

  • Creating Quizzes and Exams
  • Setting Time Limits and Date Restrictions
  • Releasing Feedback and Correct Answers
  • Strategies for Test Security
  • Viewing Quiz Results and Statistics

Advanced Topics: Grades, Groups, Rubrics, Release Conditions 

Description:  Topics include:

  • Releasing Final Grades
  • Using Categories to Drop Lowest Scores
  • Creating Electronic Rubrics Within D2L
  • Organizing Students into Groups
