2011-2012 Academic Year Department News:

Communication:

  • Dr. Brett Barnett presented two papers at the Ohio Communication Association Conference being held at the University of Findlay in Findlay, OH on September 30th.
  • Dr. Katrina Quinn travelled with students to make a presentation at the Pennsylvania Communication Association 72nd Annual Convention at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA on October 8th.
  • Dr. Valerie Swarts travelled to give three presentations at the New York State Communication Association Conference in Ellenville, NY on October 21st.
  • Dr. Joseph Harry presented a paper at the Semiotic Society of America Annual meeting at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA on October 27th.
  • Dr. Mark Zeltner travelled with students to attend the College Media Advisor's Convention in Orlando, FL on October 27th.
  • Dr. Mark Chase attended the National Communication Association Conference in New Orleans, LA on November 17th.
  • Dr. Li Pu presented a paper at the 97th National Communication Association Convention in New Orleans, LA on November 17th.
  • Dr. Amy Walters took her Communication Age class to London, England for spring break on March 8th.
  • Dr. Brett Barnett presented a paper and served on a panel at the 2012 Central States Communication Association conference in Cleveland, OH on March 29th.
  • Dr. Mark Chase attended the Broadcast Educator's Association and The National Association of Broadcaster's Conference in Las Vegas, NV on April 17th.
  • Dr. Thomas Flynn presented at the Eastern Communication Association Convention in Boston, MA on April 26th.
  • Dr. Katrina Quinn will participate in a conference at Ryerson University, School of Journalism hosted by the International Association for Literary Journalism in Toronto, Ontario on May 17th.
  • Mr. Joseph Harry will participate in the Newsplex Teaching and Research in Convergent Media in Columbia, SC on June 17th.

Computer Science:

  • Dr. Maria Harrington presented a paper at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in Las Vegas, NV on September 19th.
  • Dr. Deborah Whitfield and Dr. David Dailey travelled to the SVGOpen2011 conference in Boston, MA on October 16th.
  • Mr. Frank Hulick attended the ISECON Conference and presented an abstract in Wilmington, North Carolina on November 2nd.
  • Dr. Michael Conlon attended the Information Systems Educators' Conference in Wilmington, NC on November 3rd.
  • Dr. David Dailey attended the DevCon5 conference in Santa Clara, CA on December 6th.
  • Dr. David Dailey presented a two day workshop and participated in Kurukshetra Technology Festival at Anna University in Chennai, India on January 27th.
  • Dr. Deborah Whitfield attended the SIGCSE2012 in Raleigh, NC on February 29th.
  • Dr. Stephen Larson, Dr. Maria Harrington, and Dr. Paul Mullins attended the PACISE conference at Millersville University in Millersville, PA on March 30th. Dr. Larson presented a paper. Dr. Harrington presented two papers and attended a required board meeting activity. Dr. Mullins accompanied students as a team coach to participate in a statewide intercollege programming contest.

Criminology & Criminal Justice:

  • Dr. Eric Kocian presented at the National Criminology Conference with a fellow colleague from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Washington D.C. on November 15th.
  • Dr. Patrick Harvey, Dr. David Champion, Dr. Sarah Kuehn, and Dr. Rebecca Schnupp participated in a roundtable discussant - A Discussion of the History, Effectiveness, Evaluations, and Case Examples of Specialized Courts at the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice Educators Annual meeting in Altoona, PA on March 30th.

Government Contracting Assistance Center:

  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the annual Minority, Women, and Disadvanatged Business Enterprise Governmental Committee Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA on September 23rd.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the annual Minority Economic Development Week Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on October 7th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Center's Fall Training Conference in Arlington, VA on October 30th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker exhibited at the PA Business Technology Conference at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA on November 17th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the monthly MWDBE Governmental Committee in Pittsburgh, PA on November 18th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker co-hosted "Basics of Federal Government Contracting Seminar" in Penn Hill, PA on December 7th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the quarterly GACO/GCAC meeting in California, PA on December 22nd.
  • Ms. Renee Decker participated in the annual MWDBE Governmental Committee Conference for Minority and Women-Owned Businesses in Pittsburgh, PA on March 1st.
  • Ms. Renee Decker co-hosted the FAR seminar at the Doubletree Hotel in Washington, PA on March 15th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the DLA Federal Audit of GACO/GCAC program at California University of Pennsylvania, in California, PA on March 28th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker participated in the Dynamic Networking for Small Business Event in Fairmont, WV on April 4th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker co-hosted FAR Seminar Series Part 2 in Monroeville, PA on April 19th.

Military Science:

  • LTC Patrick Callahan travelled to the 2011 Brigade Ranger Challenge in Camp Smith, NY on October 13th.

Professional Studies:

  • Dr. Ahmad Khalili attended the National Science Foundation Grant Workshop in Indiana State University of Pennsylvania on September 20th.
  • Ms. Lori Zulauf presented a paper at the 51st Annual Conference of the Association for General and Liberal Studies in Miami, FL on October 5th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio attended Building Change: Social Justice Convergence with students in Pittsburgh, PA on October 13th.
  • Mr. Mustafa Aksel Casson attended the American Anthropological Association Annual Meetings in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on
    November 16th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio accompanied students to Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Institute as required for CNP certification in Kansas City, MO on January 1st.
  • Dr. Armand Policicchio attended Japan-American Society Workshop on Buddhism and Therapy in Cranberry Township, PA on January 26th.
  • Dr. Armand Policicchio attended a meeting to discuss teaching and explore the development of a partnership with the district at Seneca Valley Middle School in Harmony, PA on February 14th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio led a group of nonprofit students to Prague and Poland on March 8th.
  • Mr. Mustafa Aksel Casson attended the Society for American Archaeology annual meeting presenting as part of an Asian Pottery Studies Symposium in Memphis, TN on April 18th.
  • Dr. Ahmad Khalili will present a paper entitled "Explaining the uprising in the Middle East: An inquiry into the Arab Spring in the context of Mannheim's Sociology of Knowledge" at the International Social Theory Consortium 2012 in Saint Augustine, FL on May 17th.
  • Dr. Susan Lubinski will attend the Pre-Law Advisors National Conference in Washington, D.C. on June 12th.

Safety Management:

  • Dr. Angela Bernardo attended the Safety & Industrial Supply Expo at the Carpenter's Union Training Center in Pittsburgh, PA on October 6th.
  • Dr. Angela Bernardo attended the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association safety committee meeting in Wexford, PA on October 12th.
  • Dr. Angela Bernardo attended the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association safety meeting in Wexford, PA on December 7th.
  • Dr. Angela Bernardo attended the MASHA Safety and Health conference in Cranberry Township on April 26th.

School of Business:

  • Dr. Ahmad Shahidi presented "Celebrity Effects in Financial Markets" at the Academy of Business Research Conference in Atlantic City, NJ on September 13th.
  • Ms. Jeananne Nicholls attended an academic conference and presented three manuscripts in Myrtle Beach, SC on October 1st.
  • Dr. Frances Amatucci travelled with students to deliver a presentation to the American Association of Sustainability in Higher Education meeting in Pittsburgh, PA on October 9th.
  • Dr. Melanie Anderson presented a paper entitled "Building Accounting Students Written Communication Skills One Assignment at a Time" at the Northeastern Association of Business, Economics and Technology 2011 Conference on October 18th.
  • Dr. Benjamas Jirasakuldech presented a paper entitled "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos in Reits Industry: A Pre- and Post-1993 Comparison" at the Financial Management Annual Meeting in Denver, CO on October 19th.
  • Dr. Melanie Anderson attended the SAS Event at Carbis Walker in New Castle on October 20th.
  • Ms. Jeananne Nicholls, who was selected as a 2011 Doctoral Consortium Fellow for the Society for Marketing Advances, presented a peer reviewed paper at the SMA academic conference in Memphis, TN on November 1st.
  • Dr. John Golden attended and accompanied students to the Duquesne University Beard Symposium on Sustainable Business in Pittsburgh, PA on November 10th.
  • Dr. John Buttermore, Dr. David Culp, and Dr. Fred Webb travelled to St. Vincent College on November 11th in Latrobe, PA. Dr. Buttermore
     attended the regional meeting of ACBSP, business accreditation association. Dr. Webb and 
    Dr. Culp attended the Eastern Council of Business Schools and Programs for Accreditation Annual Meeting.
  • Dr. Fusun Gonul presented a paper entitled "Innovative Teaching" at the ACBSP Region 2 Conference in Latrobe, PA on November 12th.
  • Dr. Frances Amatucci attended the 2012 conference of the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 11th.
  • Dr. Richard Grimm travelled to the USASBE conference to attend entrepreneurship learning sessions and to present a paper on business plan valuations in New Orleans, LA on January 14th.
  • Dr. John Golden attended the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture State Conference in State College, PA on February 2nd.
  • Ms. Rhonda Clark, Dr. John Golden, and Dr. Bruce Orvis accompanied 29 AKPsi students to the Professional Business Leader Institute regional conference in Philadelphia, PA on February 10th.
  • Dr. Roger Solano attended the Campus Leadership/Evidence Kickoff in Harrisburg, PA on February 21st.
  • Dr. Bruce Orvis accompanied the Sales Management class of 20 students to Florence, Venice, and Rome, Italy for spring break on March 8th.
  • Dr. Ahmad Shahidi attended the University of Dayton R.I.S.E. Conference in Dayton, OH on March 28th.
  • Dr. John Golden attended the PASSHE Student Business Plan Competition Award Ceremony in Harrisburg, PA on April 2nd.
  • Dr. Diane Galbraith presented a paper, "Academic Integrity: Implications for HRM" at IABD in Long Beach, CA on April 18th.
  • Dr. Donald Mong and Dr. Jesus Valencia both accompanied two students to the 32nd Iroquois Club Economic Seminar in Conneaut Lake, PA on April 18th.
  • Dr. Donald Mong attended a continuing legal education seminar, "Tips and Techniques for Persuasive Legal Writing", at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute Professional Development Conference Center in Pittsburgh, PA on May 10th.
  • Dr. David Culp will present a paper on Sustainability in the Business Curriculum at Clarion University in Clarion, PA on May 31st.
  • Dr. David Culp and Dr. John Buttermore will attend the ACBSP 2012 Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD on June 15th.
  • Dr. Fusun Gonul will present a paper, "Innovative Teaching", at the ACBSP International in Baltimore, MD on June 15th.
  • Dr. Melanie Anderson will attend the IMA Annual Conference and will be a presenter and research lab participant in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 23rd.

  • Bryan Learn obtained a grant to attend the SC11 Supercomputing conference along with Dr. Valentine in Seattle, WA on November 11th.
  • Kelly Smith presented Platform Independent Cloud Scripting at SIGCSE 2012 Student Research Competition in Raleigh, NC on February 29th.
  • Kyle Messner, Michael Tasota, Bryan Learn, and Christopher Spack attended the PACISE conference to participate in a statewide intercollege programming contest at Millersville University in Millersville, PA on March 30th.

School of Business:

  • Kerry Pritchard, Kenneth Lazor, Nicole Heckathorn, Melissa Burkey, and Michelle Caparoula travelled with Dr. John Golden to the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on October 9th.
