2013-2014 Academic Year Department News:

Communication:

  • Dr. Thomas Flynn met with The Eastern Communication Association Executive Council on August 15th to plan for the ECA 2014 Convention to be held in Providence, RI. Dr. Flynn is the primary convention planner.
  • Dr. Thomas Flynn met with baseball personnel and players for research for a book that he is presently working on in Cleveland, OH on September 20th.
  • Dr. Thomas Stewart attended the Sustainability Conference in Seven Springs, PA on September 20th.
  • Dr. Victor Evans visited and accompanied students to the WPXI TV Studio to allow broadcast students to see a live newscast in Pittsburgh, PA on September 24th.

Computer Science:

  • Dr. Paul Mullins presented a paper at FECS'13 in Las Vegas, NV on July 21st.
  • Dr. Stephen Larson participated in a panel at the PhD Project's Information Systems Doctoral Student Association Conference and presented a paper at the 2013 Americas Conference on Information Systems in Chicago, IL on August 13th.
  • Dr. Deborah Whitfield will attend the STEM-UP PA OASIS at the Dixon University Center, in Harrisburg, PA several times over the fall semester.
  • Dr. Sam Thangiah presented a paper and attend The Institute for Operations Research and Management Science Conference in Minneapolis, MN on October 6th.

  • Dr. Paul Mullins was the team coach for the Regional ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest at Youngstown State University, OH on November 8th.
  • Dr. Sam Thangiah participated in the PASSHE undergraduate conference in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Slippery Rock, PA on November 15th.
  • Dr. David Valentine accompanied the Student Cluster Competition Team to Denver, CO where they competed at the SC13 conference, on November 16th.

  • Dr. Mitchell Church presented a full paper presentation at the International Conference for Information Systems in Milan, Italy on December 13th. The paper is titled: "Pin It To Win It: A Study of Marketing Success In "Curation-Based" Online Social Networks."

Criminology & Criminal Justice:

  • Dr. Patrick Harvey attended the 6th Annual Homeland Security and Defense Education Summit, HSDECA, for program development in Burlington, MA on September 6th.
  • Dr. David Champion attended the Juvenile Courts Judges Commission (JCJC) conference resource day, to promote the Criminology Master's program to working professionals in Harrisburg, PA on November 8th.
  • Dr. Rebecca Schnupp presented a paper and attended The American Society of Criminology at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA on November 18th.
  • Dr. Xin Jiang attended The American Society of Criminology Roundtable Session and presented a paper in Atlanta, GA on November 19th. The paper is titled: "Immigrant Youth and Delinquency: Assessing the Significance of Social Control and Differential Association."
  • Dr. Rebecca Schnupp attended and presented at the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice Educators annual conference in Lockhaven, PA on March 28th.

Government Contracting Assistance Center:

  • Ms. Renee Decker co-hosted the "Accounting or Government Contracts" seminar at National Energy Technology Laboratory, in Pittsburgh, PA on July 25th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker hosted the Veteran-Owned Business Seminar at VA Butler Healthcare on August 15th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the Contracting with the Federal Government Seminar in Meadville, PA on September 25th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the MWDBE Governmental Committee Annual Planning Meeting in Allegheny County, on September 27th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker was the co-sponsor and participated in the Procurement Opportunities Fair in Mars, PA on October 23rd.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the 4th Annual NCMA-Pittsburgh Tool Box Training for Contract Management Personnel Seminar in Pittsburgh, PA on October 30th.

  • Ms. Renee Decker made a presentation on GCAC services at Highmark's Lunch and Learn program in Pittsburgh, PA on November 8th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the APTAC Fall Training Conference in Washington, DC on November 10th.  
  • Ms. Renee Decker co-hosted "Understanding Pennsylvania's Department of General Services Construction Contracting" seminar, in Pittsburgh, PA on December 4th.
  • Ms. Renee Decker attended the annual APTAC conference in San Francisco, CA on March 23rd.

Military Science:

  • MSG Jeffrey Herzog competed in the annual Army Ten Miler event and visit educational sites such as The Smithsonian and attend the AUSA conference in Arlington, VA on October 18th.
  • MSG John Cutter participated in the Ranger Challenge Event at Ft Dix JK, on November 8th.
  • MSG Jeffrey Herzog and SRU ROTC Cadets participated in a field opportunity in Ravenna, OH on November 14th.
  • Dr. Joseph Alessi and MSG Cutter traveled to Ft Dix for a Commanders Conference and presentation in Ft Dix, NJ on December 8th.  

Professional Studies and Interdisciplinary Programs:

  • Dr. Susan Lubinski attended the 6th Annual Homeland Defense and Security Education Summit in Bedford, MA on September 25th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio attended a site visit and service project with Holy Family Institute and Center that Cares in Pittsburgh, PA on September 27th.
  • Dr. Richelle Dykstra presented her paper at the Annual Conference of the International Organization of Social Sciences and Behavioral Research in Las Vegas, NV on October 4th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio presented at the 2013 Academic Innovation Conference: Fostering Learning through Student Engagement in Shippensburg, PA on October 17th. The presentation is titled: "SPEAK UP! A Case of Community-Based Student Research"
  • Dr. Ahmad Khalili was the SRU representative in attendance at the annual meeting of Consortium for Educational Resources on Islamic Studies (CERIS) at Seton Hill University, on October 25th.
  • Ms. Alice Del Vecchio attended a leadership training event for Pittsburgh high school youth in Pittsburgh, PA on October 31st.
  • Dr. Armand Policicchio attended the MEPPI Japan Leture Series in Cranberry Township, PA on January 23rd.
  • Dr. Richelle Dykstra attended the North East Ohio Undergraduate Sociological Symposium at Kent University, on March 1st.
  • Dr. Armand Policicchio attended the AAS Asian Studies Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA on March 26th.

School of Business:

  • Dr. Frances M. Amatucci attended a conference on DC Technology, sponsored by the Business of Humanity Project, University of Pittsburgh, in Prague, Czech Republic on October 3rd.
  • Dr. David Jordan was a guest lecturer for research on factors associated with choice of a consumer directed health plan at Penn State University New Kensington on October 3rd.
  • Dr. Jeananne Nicholls presented an accepted paper at the Marketing Management Association Fall Educators' Conference. The paper is titled- Behavioral Reasoning Theory: A Primer.
  • Dr. Jeananne Nicholls presented an accepted paper at the Atlantic Marketing Association Conference in Nashville, TN on October 8th.  The paper is titled- The Relevance of Ethics, CSR, and Sustainability Topic in the Business School & Marketing Curricula: an Initial Survey of Deans & Department Heads.
  • Dr. John Golden presented and attended the Northeastern Association of Business, Economics and Technology 2013 Conference in State College, PA on October 16th.
  • Dr. Rhonda Clark will present a paper and attend the conference: Northeastern Association of Business, Economics and Technology (NABET).
  • Dr. Sunita Mondal attended the Annual Pennsylvania Economic Association Board of Directors meeting in State College, PA on October 19th.

  • Dr. Donald Mong served both as Secretary of the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Association of Legal Studies in Business Conference and Editorial Board Member of the Atlantic Law at Carey School of Business, in Baltimore, Maryland on March 21st.
  • Dr. David Jordan attended the Teaching and Learning with Technology Symposium as a co-presenter of "Accessibility Technology and Educational Issues: Evaluating the Merits of Multimedia in Online Pedagogy - Barriers and Benefits, at University Park, PA on March 21st.
  • Dr. John Golden accompanied 10 students from the School of Business to RISE Investment conference at University of Dayton, on March 26th.

  • Dr. David Jordan will present two submitted papers at the Academyhealth Annual Research Meeting in San Diego, California, on June 7th.
  • Dr. Benjamas Jirasakuldech will present a paper titled "Eveluating the Credit Risk in Online Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Lending" at the World Finance Conference during July 2-4 2014 in Venice, Italy.

  • Dr. Robertha Abney attended the Robert Morris University Sport Management Student Conference in Moon Township, PA on October 18th.
  • Dr. Brian Crow attended the Anti-hazing workshop and presentation at the International Crowd Management Conference in Atlanta and San Antonio, on November 8th.
  • Dr. Robertha Abney attended the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) Board meetings in Washington, DC on November 15th.
  • Dr. Brian Crow accompanied students to  the SEVT Conference in Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC on November 20th.

  • Connor Dodd, Doug Drew, Daisha Hale, Ruta Juseviciute, Will Kengor, Alex Larkin, Bridge McClure, Tateana Turner and Colin Wiles visited the WPXI TV Studio with the Broadcast Journalism class to see a live newscast in Pittsburgh, PA on September 24th.

  • Nine students from the Communications department will attend and participate in the Eastern Communication Association Conference in Providence, R.I. on April 23rd.
  • Four students will present research at the Eastern Communication Association (ECA) Conference at the undergraduate scholars conference in Providence, RI on April 24th.
  • Kyle Holmegren, Cody McCullough and Matthew Morgan will visit WKBN/WYFX TV studio in Youngstown, OH to observe a live production of newscast, and meet with professionals for TV Field Production class, on April 24th.

Computer Science:

  • Daniel Arnett presented a paper and attended the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science Conference in Minneapolis, MN on October 6th.
  • Kyle Marich and Daniel V. Miller presented a paper at The Graphical Web in San Francisco, CA on October 21st.
  • Tyler Bassett, Nicholas Botzer and Zachary Petrusch presented a poster at the Consortium for Computing Science in Colleges at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey on November 1st.
  • Nicklaus Benedict, Nocholas Botzer and Zachary Petrusch participated in the Regional ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest at Youngstown State University, OH on November 8th.

Sport Management:

  • Renee Dubuc, Jon Michael Cardamone, Adam Obringer and Shannon E Yaugher competed on a team from SRU in the Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow case study competition in Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC on November 20th.
