 Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal skills or the ‘soft’ skills are important building blocks for students to master prior to entrance into a career in business.  These skills include but are not limited to communication skills, networking skills, personality, emotional intelligence, respect, and character.  Interpersonal relationships are comprised of how you relate to others and how others such as your manager, co-workers, and customers perceive you.  Organizations are placing a growing emphasis on these skills as a complement to the traditional hard skills such as professional proficiency.  Interpersonal skills, or a holistic approach, maximizing both left and right brain potential, are a competitive advantage in today’s workplace.  Daniel Pink, in his book, A Whole New Mind (2005), suggests that the left hemisphere of the brain analyzes the details; the right hemisphere synthesizes the big picture.

The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) has noted that interpersonal skills and relationship-building skills are two of the most essential qualities for success.  Positive interpersonal skills increase productivity and performance while reducing conflicts, which will be increasingly more important in a diverse global workplace. These skills, particularly emotional intelligence can be learned and developed over time, unlike IQ which remains the same.  The School of Business provides opportunities for students to sharpen these skills:

  • Classroom team projects
  • Experiential learning projects
  • Student organizations
  • Speakers
  • Engagement with professionals
  • Internships
  • Community/service learning projects
