 Alumni Testimonials

The success of our program can be demonstrated by the success of our graduates. From Fortune 500 companies to local nonprofits, our alums prove that a degree from SRU's Communication Department can get them where they want to go. These are just some of our points of pride.

Jessica Rupell
May 2009 Graduate
Communication: Journalism

Currently, I am the Social Networking Coordinator at Rita’s Franchise Company (Bensalem, PA), and am taking graduate classes towards an MA in Public Relations at Immaculata University.

“The expertise of the professors and the diverse class load I had at Slippery Rock University certainly helped me to get to where I am today. Not only did classes like Junior and Senior Seminar help me to perfect my resume writing, interviewing, and etiquette skills, but the variety of classes helped me to become a more well-rounded individual so that I could better market myself to future employers. I definitely wouldn’t be the professional that I am today, or hold the position that I have, without the education I received at SRU.”

Danielle Scotti
May 2008 Graduate
B.S Communications – Public Relations Track

I am currently employed at Markowitz Communications in Pittsburgh.  I started my career as an intern, then associate and now recently promoted to account services manager.  From writing to event planning, production and media buying, working at a small agency allows me to be involved with different aspects of the Public Relations field.   Every day in PR is different which is what I love - one day I could be in the office putting together media kits and the next I could be traveling for a media tour with a high profile client!

“Slippery Rock University’s Communication Department provided me with classroom skills that easily translated to real world situations.  From learning professional writing to preparing me for interviews, it gave me a solid foundation for me to start my career.”

Currently working on MA degree in Higher Education at Geneva College

Member of PACAC – Pennsylvania Association for College Admissions Counseling and PACCAO – Pennsylvania Community College Admissions Officers

“While a student in the communication department at SRU, I was actively involved with groups such as Zeta Phi Eta.  Through this, I learned that it is important to get involved with affiliated professional organizations, even as a working professional.”

Tracy Alexander
2002 Graduate
Communication – Public Relations

South Beaver Twp., PA, Supervisor of Community Relations for Lifesteps, Member: Beaver Area Jaycees volunteer civic organization

"I left Slippery Rock University with confidence that my education, experiences in student organizations like PRSSA, and the support from the department and my advisor, Dr. Tom Flynn, had prepared me for my career. It was through my classes, my volunteering and my internship that I knew before graduation day that I wanted to be in the nonprofit PR world. Today I supervise the department I started in at an entry level just 4 years ago. I encourage all Communication Department students to take advantage of the opportunities your professors, and university, are offering to you."

Tabitha Kupec
May 2009 Graduate
Communication - Public Relations

I currently reside in Butler, raising a 4-year old son.  I am the Executive Assistant for Quality Life Services and have been employed there since June 2009.

“The multifaceted approach the communication department uses to teach the necessary skills is wonderful.  My job consists of verbal communication internally and externally, design skills for the marketing department and some web design.  I was introduced to all of these skills at SRU and that multifaceted approach gave me the confidence to do my job.”

Currently reside in Pittsburgh

Marketing & Development Assistant at Life’sWork of Western PA

Currently seeking to expand my education in granting writing

“Slippery Rock University’s Communication Department not only gave me the education that was needed to understand Public Relations but it gave me hands on work experience that built my resume and gave me the confidence to enter into a Public Relations job shortly after graduation.  I feel like even as a graduate I can still contact the professors for advice if needed.”

Mara Kudrick -University of Pittsburgh

"I feel that I received a great education as a student at Slippery Rock University.  All of my professors in my major knew me by name, and were always available to me outside of the normal classroom hours.  I took a perfect mix of theory and practical classes, which provided me with a sound understanding of the field, and hands on experience.  I know that Slippery Rock was the best place for me."

Jason Demek- Producer for WPGH Fox-53

"If it wasn't for the education I received from Slippery Rock University I would have never received the internship at WPGH.  My degree in Emerging Technology and Multimedia wasn't just focused on a certain aspect of communications - I received a broad education from everything to computer programming, group interaction, journalism, and even law. It made me a better professional, because my expertise wasn't just focused on one thing. It also made it easier to market myself once I graduated and obtain the position I have today."
