 Dr. Catriona Higgs 



Dr. Catriona Higgs, Ph.D

   Dr. Higgs is a professor and the department chairperson of the Sport Management Department at Slippery Rock University.  She is a sport sociologist who specializes in research on gender relations in sport.  She has edited or co-edited over 100 national and international presentations, and written numerous publications on issues ranging from coverage of women in sport by the media, to socio-historical analyses of the All American Girls' Professional Baseball League, to gender equity issues at the elementary school level.  Her publications have appeared in the Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal, The Canadian Journal of the History of Sport, The Journal of Sport and Social Issues, Nine: A Journal of Baseball Policy and Social Perspectives, and the Sport Sociology Journal.

   Dr. Higgs is an active member of the Sport Management Department.  Her course load includes the following classes; American Sport in the 21st Century, Diversity Issues in Sport Management, and Research Methods and Analysis. She also coordinates student practica and has supervised numerous internships. In 2003/2004 and 2006/2007 Dr. Higgs’ dedication to the teaching profession was recognized in the Who’s Who Among American Teachers publication. She is active professionally, having served as the chair of the sport sociology academy for the American Alliance and on the Executive Council of the PSAHPERD. Additionally, she has acted as a research consultant to various sport organizations in the United States. She co-founded and directed the National Girls and Women in Sport Symposium; a national event that attracted the foremost researchers in the field to Slippery Rock University from 1990-1993.  In 1993 she was the co-recipient of the Nancy Rehm Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to girls and women in sport. In 1995 she received the NAGWS Presidential Award for contributions to girls and women in sport.  She is also the recipient of the Kitty Magee Outstanding Alumnae Award from Texas Woman's University Kinesiology Department and the Advisor of the year Award from Slippery Rock University.  Dr. Higgs received her B.S. in Sport Sociology from Dunfermline College of Physical Education (Edinburgh, Scotland, G.B.), her M.S.from from Stirling University (Stirling, Scotland, G.B.) and her Ph. D from Texas Woman's University (Denton, TX).
