2012-2013 Highlights

April SMA Speaker Series

On Tuesday April 30th, the NEW SMA board held their first Speaker Series together and the fourth Speaker Series of the 2013 spring semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Our speaker was Wendy Snodgrass, Associate Athletic Director, Compliance Coordinator, and Senior Women Administrator at Clarion University. Wendy spoke about her career path going between careers such as teaching as well as athletics. The SMA Board would like to wish everyone a happy summer, see you in the fall semester!

36th Anniversary SRU Sport

Management Banquet

The 36th Anniversary Sport Management Banquet was held on April 20th to recognize the 36 years of success the department has had at Slippery Rock University. We wanted to thank alumni, professors, students, family and friends for their support by bringing us all together to celebrate in a formal setting. There was guest speaker Lindsey Mitchell, Corporate Communications Manager for the New Orleans Saints and Hornets. She discussed her career path from college to where she is now and obstacles she faced along the way. The faculty annonced various awards and recognitions during the dinner.

Proceeds from the banquet and silent auction went towards The Sport Management Scholarship Fund, which annually awards two deserving students $500 scholarships and the Make a Wish Foundation.

April 2013 SMA Board Elections

On Tuesday April 2nd, the SMA held their annual SMA Board Elections for the 2013-2014 school year. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Nominations were made for next year's SMA Board and each position was up for any new members who wanted to be a part of SMA.

March SMA Speaker Series

On Tuesday March 5th, the SMA held their second speaker series of the 2013 spring semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Announcements for next SMA Board elections were made. Our guest speaker was Ryan Carmen, SRU Sport Management Alumni and Golf Operations Manager at Nemacolin Woodland's Resort. Mr. Carmen spoke about hospitality management at Nemacolin Woodlands along with the challenges that come with the career path he chose.

January SMA Speaker Series

On Thursday January 31st, the Sport Management Alliance held their first SMA Speaker Series of the 2013 calendar year in the BSB Auditorium during common hour. As always there was FREE PIZZA and networking before the meeting. Our guest speaker, Buffy Filipell, President and Founder of Teamwork Online, and her assistant, gave a tutorial on how to use Teamwork Online and assist us in looking at a career in sport.

November SMA Speaker Series

On Tuesday November 6th, the SMA held their last Speaker Series of 2012. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting and a chance for everyone to network with other students and this month's speaker! Our speaker for the month was Tyrone Brooks, the Director of Player Personnel for the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Club.

Facility and Event Management Class Facilities Tour

On October 24th, the Facility and Event Management Class toured The Petersen Event Center, The David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Heinz Field and CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The class gained valuable experience about the inner workings of facility management. SRU Sport Management Alumni helped guide the tours and answered multiple questions that the students had about each facility. Every student wanted to thank the Alumni for their time and agreed that this was a great experience for each Sport Management student to have as they progress through their studies.

2012 Rocktober Open

On Friday October 13th the Facilities and Event Management class hosted the third annual Rocktober Open charity golf outing at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage, PA. Golfers enjoyed a great day of golf followed by a nicely prepared dinner reception. The event was organized and executed entirely by the students. Guests were able to participate in 50-50's, silent auctions, prize raffles that included items such as signed player apparel from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, and San Diego Chargers. The event rose over $9,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Slippery Rock Sport Management Scholarship Fund.

October SMA Speaker Series

On Thursday October 11th, the SMA board held their second Speaker Series of the 2012 fall semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting and a chance for everyone to network! Our speaker for the month was Ryan Fleischer, the Assistant AD of Compliance at Robert Morris University.

Robert Morris Conference

On Friday, September 28th several SRU Sport Management Students attended the 9th Annual Robert Morris Sport Management Student Conference. The conference enables students to network with professionals that hold prestigious positions in the sport industry. Every student had a chance to network with professionals at round tables that allows students to ask their questions directly. Amanda Mikatavage, Senior Sport Management major summarized her experience, “The RMU conference is a very beneficial experience that I would recommend all sport management students to attend. This past year was my second year attending and each year I took away something that will help me pursue a career in the sport industry. Personally, the conference helped me to be more confident speaking in front of strangers, allowed me to network and create relationships with professionals to help obtain a practicum, and most importantly they provide quality advice and information from their own experiences that helped me learn what's essential and required to be a successful sport manager."

SMA BBQ

On Thursday September 20^th the Sport Management Alliance

held their annual barbeque. This first SMA event of the 2011-2012 school year included some great grilling by our very own Kyle Heiden and Jon Michael Cardamone, corn hole, a chipping contest, and a relaxed interaction between faculty and students. This was also the second time our freshmen met with their upperclassmen mentors through the Student Mentor Program for the 2012-2013 school year.

On Tuesday September 11th, the SMA board held their first Speaker Series of the 2012 fall semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting and a chance for everyone to network! Our speaker was Paul Hightower, the Associate AD of Facilities and Operations at Duquesne University.
