Concentration in Marine Science

Slippery Rock University is a member of The Marine Science Consortium, Inc., a non-profit educational corporation which operates the Wallops Island Marine Science Center (WIMSC) near Chincoteague, Virginia. College courses in marine biology, marine geology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography, and non-science marine-related courses are offered in the summer months at WIMSC. These courses vary from the introductory level to specialized courses designed for seniors and post baccalaureate students.

Careers in marine biology or marine geology are mostly limited to state and federal agencies, and universities. Most of these jobs require the student to pursue graduate degrees in specialized areas of marine science. An excellent preparation for these advanced studies is an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or geology, with an introduction or concentration in marine studies.

The courses offered at WIMSC provide the opportunity to obtain the introduction or concentration in marine studies. These summer courses provide a balance between lecture, field work and laboratory work.
