 School Nurse Certification Program 



As of January 2011, based upon Chapter 49 legislation by the PA Department of Education, the total credits in the program are now 21 Graduate Level credits. This accommodates the increase in credits in Special Education and English as a Second Language required by the PA Department of Education.

About the Program

  • Consists of 21 graduate credits
  • Includes a 100 hour practicum with a Certified School Nurse in the last Nursing Course N623 (50 hours elementary and 50 hours secondary)
  • Program can be completed in 4 semesters by taking 6 credits per semester, including summer and winter
  • Can be completed at a slower rate by taking 3 credits per semester until the last nursing courses:
  • N622 and N623 must be taken together in the last semester of the program
  • N623 requires 100 hours with a Certified School Nurse as a preceptor in a school district near your residence (50 hours elementary and 50 hours secondary)
  • Students are permitted to choose any school district in the vicinity, but if they are employed full time in a school district they must arrange the practicum in a different school district

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following PA Department of Education requirements:

  • A completed BSN degree
  • Current unrestricted Pennsylvania license as a registered nurse; action on license or positive background check may affect your ability to be certified
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission, 3.0 GPA maintained while in the program

Immediately prior to taking N622/N623 Nursing Practice Theory with School Populations-PR, which contains the 100 hours of precepted experience (50 hours elementary and 50 hours secondary) with a Certified School Nurse, the student must show proof of:

  • Completion of NURS 603, SEFE 607, and a minimum of 2 Special Education courses completed prior to taking NURS 622-623
  • Current CPR Certification 
  • Clearances:
    • Act 34  Clearance -- PA State Police Criminal Record Check
    • Act 151 Clearance -- PA Child Abuse History 
    • Act 114 Clearance -- FBI Background Check  
    • Signed School District Practicum Form

(Please Note: Fingerprinting must be completed through the Department of Education, not the Department of Public Welfare.)                                                                              

  • Proof of personal professional malpractice insurance
  • At the beginning of the semester prior to taking NURS 622/623, the student must notify the school nurse program director to request a packet of course requirements in preparation for the practicum                  

Applicants should apply online to SRU Graduate Admissions:

A completed graduate application includes:

  • Copy of Pennsylvania RN license
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary academic institutions (including school of nursing)
  • Application fee

Application Process:

  • Application will be reviewed by SRU Graduate Admissions Office 
  • Letter of acceptance will be sent to applicant by SRU Graduate Admissions if student has been deemed admissable
  • Applicant must respond to the offer of admission
  • Program coordinator will send a welcome letter and worksheet with a list of all courses needed to complete the School Nurse Certificate program
  • Applicants are accepted each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) until the courses are full
  • If courses are full, applicant will be offered admission into the program for the next semester
  • Upon completion of the school nurse requirements an application must be submitted electronically through the Teacher Information Management System (TIMS). Supporting documentation pertaining to certification will be sent by the applicant directly to the state per the instructions in TIMS. A Level I certification will be awarded from the Department of Education. See Act 48 for continuing education requirements.
