The Department of Dance is thrilled to report that Miller Auditorium, the main performance venue on campus, is undergoing a major renovation. With the addition of new dance and theatre spaces, the current footprint will quadruple in size, creating a new Performing Arts Center that will be the showpiece of the campus. The current facility will be transformed into a state-of-the-art theatre, with new performance and studio spaces, as well as shop, costume, dressing rooms and classrooms. New spaces specifically for dance will include a 260 seat studio theatre, which will allow for a wide variety of dance events--from informal showings to dance technology productions and formal concerts. When not in use as a performance venue, this 4000 square foot studio will be used daily for dance classes. A second studio space will also be constructed, which will be close to 3000 square feet, and will provide additional space for dance classes and informal showings. New dressing rooms, costume and equipment storage, and state-of-the-art technologies will provide the Department of Dance with an exceptional dance facility.
The building project is expected to take two years to complete. In the meantime, the Department of Dance will continue to present dance concerts in Swope Music Building and other facilities on campus, as well as in the community. The beautiful Succop Theatre on the campus of Butler County Community College (only 25 minutes from SRU), will be one of the venues in which we will perform during the Performing Arts center renovation.
