An Evening with Jay Smar:
Pennsylvania Coal Mining Songs
and Traditional American Folk Music
Thursday, April 18, 7:30 in Sheehy Theatre in Maltby
Jay Smar performs on guitar, fiddle, banjo and vocals, recreating many of the traditional songs of the Northeast Pennsylvania coal mines. His interpretations of coal mining songs earned him the honor of recording music for a BBC documentary titled “The Welsh in America” which traced the migration of the Welsh to the coal fields of Pennsylvania. Smar was recently recognized by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for over 30 years of preserving coal heritage through original and documented song. Renowned artist Tom Paxton wrote “…there is a fire in his fiddle and it’ll spread to your heart.” Suggested donation of $5.
