KALEIDOSCOPE CULTURAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: ROBERTO SÁNCHEZ PIÉROLA

The Kaleidoscope Arts Festival
welcomes playwright, poet, and performance artist Roberto Sánchez Piérola of
Lima, Peru as its 2014 Cultural Artist in Residence. All events are free and
open to the public. Master classes require pre-registration, and preference
will be given to SRU students with previous theatre experience.
Roberto Sánchez Piérola has served as
the professor of “Stage Directing” and “Analysis of Scenic Discourse” in the
School of Scenic Arts of the Universidad Científica del Sur, since 2010. He has
been professor of “Theatre and Literary Scripts”, “Monographic Seminar”
(Contemporary Theatre Movements) and “Peruvian Poetry” in the Literature School
of the Universidad de San Marcos. Founder of the theatre group CUER2. Roberto
Sánchez Piérola is the author of eleven plays, all of them directed by himself.
Before forming CUER2, he directed,
amongst others, “Busca un nombre en el silencio”, published in the anthology
“Dramaturgia Peruana” edited by the Purdue University Calumet in 1999, and
winner of the first prize of the Second Peruvian - North American Theatre
Festival in 1997.
With CUER2, he directed “Víctimas”,
winner of the First San Marcos University Theatre Festival (1999), “Seguros”
(published in the “Dedo Crítico” magazine #7, 2000 and #10, 2004), finalist of
the Seventh Peruvian - North American Theatre Festival in 2004, and “Sobre el
encierro y debajo” (published in the “Muestra” magazine #11, 2003), amongst
Four of his plays have been performed
in tours and international theatre festivals in Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and
the USA. He participated in “Webs We Weave”, a play writing project organized
by the BC and the Royal Court Theatre London. He directed the Lima-based
British Theatre Group The Good Companions and has participated in Theatre Congresses.
He was the director of the Literature Magazine “Dedo Crítico” and has published
three books of poetry. His fourth book of poems (unpublished) won a Poetry
Contest in 2005.
