As a student in the Music Therapy Program, you will have many opportunties to participate in collaborative scholarly endeavors. Our students have the unique opportuntity to work side-by-side with their peers and Music Therapy faculty members in designing and implimentling Music Therapy research.
Students will learn how to summarize, evaluate, and apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world situations and experiences in a variety of their classes. You will take 6 semesters of Clinical Integration, where you will apply your understanding of evidence-based music therapy interventions with six different clinical populations. In these supervised clinical practicums, students will learn how to develop a music therapy session plan, assess clients, develop & implement a music therapy treatment plan, assess client progress over time, and develop a termination plan to assist the client in generalizing their new skills.
In addition to the hand-on learning you will gain through Clinical Integration, you will have an opportunity to write-up your clinical research in your upper-level music therapy classes. You will have an opportunity to write a clinical case study as well as a research study as part of your coursework. Additionally, your classes will review the ethics of research as well as various models of research. We encourage our students to think about ways in which research can inform clinical practice (and how clnical practice can inform research).
