Welcome to the SRU Philosophy Department!

SPOTLIGHT

AT THE HEART OF PHILOSOPHY are a number of fundamental questions: What can we know? What should we believe?  How should we live?

Philosophy teaches students to inquire in a systematic way into fundamental  questions about our lives and our relationships to others, society, and the world. It helps students pull their studies together into a unified project and to think about broader perspectives and implications, which are often lost sight of in specialized study. In particular, Philosophy helps students to develop critical thinking essential to any academic pursuit and intelligent living.

The SRU Philosophy Department has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship with faculty who specialize in a range of areas including both Continental and Analytic Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Existentialism, Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy,  the Philosophy of Religion, and Asian Philosophy.

We foster excellence in our students and offer a wide range of courses and several major tracks designed to prepare you for a chosen career or to complement another major.
