2011-2012 Highlights
35th Anniversary SRU Sport
Management Banquet
The 35th Anniversary Sport Management Banquet was held on April 20th to recognize the 35 years of success the department has had at Slippery Rock University. We wanted to thank alumni, professors, students, family and friends for their support by bringing us all together to celebrate in a formal setting. There was guest speaker Andy Major, Vice-President of Event Operations & Guest Experience for the Buffalo Bills, as well as awards and recognitions.
Proceeds from the banquet and silent auction went towards The Sport Management Scholarship Fund, which annually awards two deserving students $500 scholarships.
April SMA Meeting
On Thursday April 12th, the NEW SMA board held their first meeting together and the fourth meeting of the 2012 spring semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Our speaker was Mark Metzka, a 1995 Sport Management Alumni who is now the Assistant Director of Admissions at Slippery Rock University.
March SMA Meeting
On Thursday March 8th, the SMA held their third meeting of the 2012 spring semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Nominations were made for next year's SMA Board and each position was up for any new members who wanted to be a part of SMA.
February SMA Meeting
On Thursday February 16th, the SMA held their second meeting of the 2012 spring semester. As always there was FREE Pizza before the meeting! Announcements for next month's SMA Board elections were made. Our guest speaker was Lisa Weinzetl, Director of Conference Services, Slippery Rock University. Ms. Weinzetl spoke of her many years in hospitality management with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves and marketing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
January SMA Meeting
On Thursday, January 26th the Sport Management Alliance held their first SMA Meeting of the 2012 calendar year in the BSB Auditorium during common hour. As always there was FREE PIZZA and networking before the meeting. Our guest speaker, Patrice Matamoros, Race Director for the Pittsburgh Marathon, gave an inspiring speech about overcoming adversity and pursuing career goals. Please join us for our next meeting on February 16th in BSB Auditorium during common hour.
Heinz Field and CONSOL Energy Center Tour
On Wednesday November 9th the Facilities and Event Management Class toured Heinz Field and CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The class gained valuable experience about the inner workings of facility management. SRU Sport Management Alumni Jason Varnish, Kyle Lux, and Lindsay Mulvihill assisted in the tour at Consol Energy Center, providing information on their duties and day to day operations at the newest arena in the NHL. Kristopher Nolt, Junior Sport Management major summarized his experience, “Attending a venue as a fan to see a game provides no insight into all the behind the scenes work that takes place to put on a quality event. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn from professionals in the sport industry. Both organizations were generous in allowing us to gain the valuable knowledge form their facilities.”
November SMA Meeting
On Tuesday November 8th the Sport Management Alliance held their final meeting of the 2011 calendar year. As always attendees enjoyed networking and free pizza before the meeting. Students were treated to a panel of Alumni. The panel included Calvin Jackson, Director of Ticketing, Pittsburgh Power, Kyle Lux, Premium Seating Representative, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Mike Oberst, Bus Marketing Coordinator, Rivers Casino. The panel shared their personal experiences of going through the SRU Sport Management program, their internship experiences, and offered advice on making the most of practical experiences.
2011 Rocktober Open
On Friday October 14th the Facilities and Event Management class hosted the second annual Rocktober Open charity golf outing at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage, PA. Golfers enjoyed a great day of golf followed by a nicely prepared dinner reception. The event was organized and executed entirely by the students. Guests were able to participate in silent and Chinese auctions that included items such as signed player apparel from the Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. The event rose over $4,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Slippery Rock Sport Management Scholarship Fund.
Robert Morris Conference
On Friday, October 7th several SRU Sport Management Students attended the Robert Morris Sport Management Student Conference. The conference enables students to network with professionals that hold prestigious positions in the sport industry. Every student had a chance to network with professionals at round tables that allows students to ask their questions directly. Amanda Mikatavage, Junior Sport Management major summarized her experience, “The RMU conference is a very beneficial experience that I would recommend all sport management students to attend. This past year was my second year attending and each year I took away something that will help me pursue a career in the sport industry. Personally, the conference helped me to be more confident speaking in front of strangers, allowed me to network and create relationships with professionals to help obtain a practicum, and most importantly they provide quality advice and information from their own experiences that helped me learn what's essential and required to be a successful sport manager.
October SMA Meeting
On Thursday October 6th the Sport Management Alliance held their second meeting of the 2011-2012 school year. As always attendees enjoyed networking with classmates and free pizza before the meeting. The guest speaker at the meeting was Gerald Jones, General Manager at PITT/IMG Sports Marketing. Mr. Jones spoke about his personal experiences working in the sales industry in both the NFL (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and the MLB (Pittsburgh Pirates). He also talked about his current position of selling corporate sponsorships with the PITT Panthers.
SMA BBQ
On Tuesday September 22nd the Sport Management Alliance held their annual barbeque. This first SMA event of the 2011-2012 school year included some great grilling by our very own Jarred Smeltz and Morris Southern, a corn hole tournament, touch football games, and a relaxed interaction between faculty and students. This was also the first time our freshmen met with their upperclassmen mentors, kicking off the Student Mentor Program for the 2011-2012 school year.
September SMA Meeting
On Tuesday September 13th the Sport Management Alliance held their first meeting of the 2011-2012 school year. As always attendees enjoyed networking and free pizza before the meeting. The guest speaker at the meeting was Sandra Ihlenfeld, Senior Physical Director for the Butler YMCA. Ms. Ihlenfeld spoke about her personal career experience and the various career opportunities within the YMCA.
