 Student Support Services

SPOTLIGHT

How can the SSSP help me?
If you are interested in performing more effectively in your academic classes, the Student Support Services program is here to help you “step up your game!” Individual academic advisement and counseling, course work, and referral comprise three major areas of program service.

I.) Academic Advisement and Counseling:
Student Support Service Program Advisors assess and monitor students’ academic progress on an on-going basis.  Intensive personalized academic advisement and counseling assist students in establishing and attaining their goals.  Data collection over a number of years has consistently indicates that the SSSP facilitates students’ progress toward academic success (program participants often show favorable advances in quality point average and academic persistence).

II.) Course work:
Students are strongly encouraged (and may be required) to participate in the following courses which have been designed to support and enhance students’ academic goals.

  • “Learning Strategies,” 98102a one credit course which is designed to provide you with consistent help throughout the semester with your approach to your academic life at Slippery Rock.  Topics include motivation, goal setting, time management, test taking, text reading, note taking, understanding the importance of a Liberal Education, discovering your preferred learning style, and learning how to improve your college level thinking skills.

III) Other campus services:
Through advisor contact in individual meetings and/or course work, students can be referred to  University offices for specialized follow-up.  The SSSP faculty often consults with and/or refer students to Financial Aid, Tutoring, Career Services, Minority Student Affairs and Cultural Diversity, Social Equity, and the Counseling Center.

Our services include:

·      Individual meetings

·      Learning Strategies 1-credit course

·      Individual tutoring
