A Message to the Parents of Our Students |
As a parent, you can encourage your son or daughter to become familiar with the Office of Career Education & Development in order to get the most out of their Slippery Rock University education and be well prepared for the transition to professional employment or graduate school.
The following is a suggested timeline for students to follow:

Choose a major/career (Freshmen-Sophomore) |
- Schedule an appointment with a career counselor to explore major and career options (724-738-2028)
- View the guides that match Majors & Careers
- Research career possibilities through O*Net
- Explore detailed information about careers, outlooks, salaries, and more with Occupational Outlook Handbook
- Take personalized inventories to identify your strengths and then find and explore related majors and careers with DISCOVER. (Please contact our office at 724-738-2028 to receive an access token and to discuss your inventory results.)

Develop professional skills (Freshmen-Senior) |
- Work, volunteer, or engage in activities related to your career interest. This will help build your resume and clarify your career goals.
- Attend special events and job fairs such as the Summer Job and Internship Fair which is held each February.
- On-campus, Off-campus, Part-time, and Seasonal positions will be posted on College Central
- Create an account on LinkedIn.com, develop a professional profile, and join the Slippery Rock University Alumni Networking group.

Prepare to be a professional (Sophomore-Senior) |
- Continually update your resume, become comfortable with writing cover letters, practice your interviewing skills and etiquette, and keep professional thank-you notes on hand.

Get related experience through an internship (Junior-Senior) |
- Internships are an excellent way to gain professional experience, academic credit, connections/networking, faculty approval and supervision.

Make a connection with employers (Junior-Senior) |
- On-campus interviewing and special events
- Participate in Job Fairs (on and off campus)
- Search postings for SRU students at College Central

Further your education (Senior) |
- Graduate school information can be obtained at our office.
- Graduate school exams such as GRE, MAT, GMAT, or LSATare often required for admission. Check with possible graduate schools to determine what test and when scores are due for application.
