 Financial Aid Calendar for Parents

SPOTLIGHT

Welcome to the SRU Financial Aid Office web pages.  We look forward to helping you through the financial aid process and invite you to contact us with any questions that may arise.

For your convenience, we have provided a general financial aid calendar below to help guide you through the aid application timeline. The timeline also provides direct links to other SRU web pages for additional details. This calendar reflects the typical timeline that high school seniors and their families will follow for fall 2014 enrollment at SRU.

Financial Aid TV is a useful tool that student and parents can access for help with questions about financial aid. Financial Aid TV is a compilation of hundreds of short videos explaining all there is to know about financial aid. To access the videos, click on the Financial Aid TV link on the right sidebar.

Timeline 2014

Beginning in January

File the 2014-15 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When filing on-line, be sure to create a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for both the parent and the student.  The PIN serves as an electronic signature and can speed up the processing of the FAFSA.  Although the FAFSA became available on Janurary 2nd, most families file by late February when they have tax figures.

 February 28

SRU Freshman Scholarship Application Deadline.  New freshmen for Fall 2014 can access this application online from the SRU Financial Aid Office pages or by clicking here.

Attention Entering Freshmen: SRU encourages families to complete the FAFSA by February 28, 2014.

 Beginning in March

Verification.   Any student whose FAFSA was selected for verification by the federal processor must provide additional documentation to the SRU Financial Aid Office.  These students will be sent instructions from the SRU Financial Aid Office with documents or forms to be completed.

Refer to MySRU. Students can go to MySRU to view current documents that are required.

Award Letters.  The SRU Financial Aid Office will begin to mail award letters to new freshmen who completed the 2014-15 FAFSA.  The award letter will provide information about the sources and amounts of financial aid the student may be eligible for, along with an estimate of 2014-15 costs.

The award letter mailing also includes important information that students should review and understand.  This information includes Terms and Conditions of Financial Aid; the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Financial Aid, and a Worksheet to help families estimate out-of-pocket expenses.  This information is also available from the Award Letters button on the Financial Aid Office webpage.

 May 1

Pennsylvania State Grant Deadline.  The FAFSA must be received by the federal processor by May 1st for state grant consideration through PHEAA.  Students who are residents from other states can refer to the FAFSA for other state deadlines.

 Beginning early June

Parents apply for a Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) if they wish to borrow a parent loan to assist with any college expenses that are not already covered by other forms of student financial aid. If a parent is denied the PLUS Loan, the student may be entitled to borrow additional Stafford Loan funds and should refer to our loan page for guidance.

Students who will borrow through the Federal Stafford Loan program for the first time must complete both:

Please note that no loan funds can be received by the student unless the student completes both the loan counseling and the Master Promissory Note.

IMPORTANT: Students must web-accept their loans on Self-Service Banner. For instructions on completing this, please refer to the Self-Service Banner Financial Aid Guide.

Students should notify the SRU Financial Aid Office of any scholarships or grants they are receiving from outside sources (from high schools, civic or religious organizations, or others).  Families with questions about Pennsylvania's TAP program should contact the SRU Office of Student Accounts.

 Beginning Mid-July

Students who qualify for a Federal Perkins Loan (specified on the award letter for any qualified students) must complete a Federal Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note.  Guidance is available through the SRU Perkins Loan Office.

 Late July

Students receive the first billing statement for the Fall 2014 semester from the Office of Student Accounts. The bill reflects applicable charges for tuition, fees, room and board (meals), along with financial aid from federal, state and institutional sources that has been confirmed at the time of the billing.

Students can view their bill online at MySRU.

 Early August

First payment due for the Fall 2014 semester for any expenses not covered by confirmed scholarships, grants and loans. Students and families are provided information about the SRU Payment Plan administered through the SRU Office of Student Accounts.

Students should arrive on campus with money for books, supplies and miscellaneous expenses.

 August 25, 2014

Fall Semester Begins.  Welcome!   The SRU Financial Aid Office encourages students to visit our office with any questions.  No appointment is necessary.

 November

Fall bill must be paid in full in order for the student to be permitted to register for the Spring 2015 semester.

 Mid-December
