Timeline for Applying for Veterans Benefits

SPOTLIGHT

Welcome to the SRU Veterans Timeline for Financial Aid and Military Education benefits.  We invite you to contact us with any questions that may arise.

For your convenience, we have provided a general financial aid and military education benefit calendar below. The timeline also provides direct links to other SRU web pages for additional details. This calendar reflects the typical timeline that students may encounter.  However, military programs sometimes change their timeline so be sure to confirm times with your unit.

  2014

January - April

File the 2014-15 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When filing on-line, be sure to request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for both the parent and the student.  The PIN serves as an electronic signature signature and can speed up the processing of the FAFSA.

 February 28

The SRU Freshman Scholarship Application Deadline for New freshmen for Fall 2014.   Students can access this application online from the SRU Financial Aid Office pages or by clicking here.

 Beginning in March

National Guard EAP – If you are in the National Guard, be sure to complete the EAP paperwork with your unit.  This application should be completed at this time for fall/spring/summer.

Verification.   Any student whose FAFSA was selected for verification by the federal processor must provide additional documentation to the SRU Financial Aid Office.  These students will be sent a verification form by the SRU Financial Aid Office to complete.  In addition, these students and their parents will be required to submit signed copies of their 2013 federal income tax returns to the SRU Financial Aid Office.

Estimate Award Letters.  The SRU Financial Aid Office will begin to mail "estimate" award letters to new freshmen who completed the 2014-15 FAFSA.  The estimate will provide information about the sources and amounts of financial aid the student may be eligible for along with an estimate of 2014-15 costs.

Beginning April 1

GI Bill – The SRU VA Enrollment Form is available online starting April 1 for the summer, fall and spring semesters.  If you are attending in the summer, be sure to return the form as soon as you have registered for summer classes.  If you will not have summer classes, be sure to return the form by June 15.

* Newly admitted students should return this form as soon as they have registered. New students should also visit Applying for Educational Benefits for the additional on-line forms that must be completed.

 May 1

Pennsylvania State Grant Deadline.  The FAFSA must be received by the federal processor by May 1st for state grant consideration through PHEAA.  Students who are residents from other states can refer to the FAFSA for other state deadlines.

Click on the News and Notices icon in the section to the right for information about a new and easier process to complete the Pennsylvania State Grant Form.

 Beginning late May

Students with a processed 2014-15 FAFSA will begin to receive an official award letter from the SRU Financial Aid Office.  The award letter will list the types and amounts of financial aid (including grants, loans, scholarships and employment) available to the student in 2014-15.  (Note, students who are selected for verification cannot receive their official award letter until they have completed the verification process.

The award letter mailing also includes a worksheet title Worksheet to Estimate Out-of-Pocket Expenses.  Families can use this brochure to help estimate any out-of-pocket expenses that may be required.

Parents apply for a Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) if they wish to borrow a parent loan to assist with any college expenses that are not already covered by other forms of student financial aid. If a parent is denied the PLUS Loan, the student may be entitled to borrow additional Stafford Loan funds and should contact the SRU Financial Aid Office for guidance.

 Beginning early June

Students who will borrow through the Federal Stafford Loan program for the first time must complete both:

Please note that no loan funds can be received by the student unless the student completes both the loan counseling and the Master Promissory Note.

Students notify the SRU Financial Aid Office of any scholarships or grants they are receiving from outside sources (from high schools, civic or religious organizations, OVR or others).  Families with questions about Pennsylvania's TAP program should contact the SRU Office of Student Accounts (a link to their office is listed below).

 Beginning Mid-July

Students who qualify for a Federal Perkins Loan (specified on the award letter for any qualified students) must complete a Federal Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note through the SRU Perkins Loan Office.

 Late July

Students receive the first billing statement of the Fall semester from the Office of Student Accounts. The bill reflects applicable charges for tuition, fees, room and board (meals), along with financial aid from federal, state and institutional sources that has been confirmed at the time of the billing.

 Early August

First payment due for the Fall semester for any expenses not covered by confirmed scholarships, grants and loans. Students and families are provided information about the SRU Payment Plan administered through the SRU Office of Student Accounts.

Students should arrive on campus with money for books, supplies and miscellaneous expenses.
