Strategic Plan 2012-2015
Current Mission: Information and Administrative Technology Services exists to support Slippery Rock University in accomplishing its mission by providing effective technology services that focus on teaching and learning while promoting an environment for research and innovation.
1. Strategy 1: IATS will make a commitment to communicate more effectively with campus community (internally and externally)
Expected Outcomes: Better communication to campus community
Action 1: IATS Management Team will create an inventory of services to inform campus community of the types of services that are currently available.
Action 2: IATS will improve its website and will keep it up-to-date, including the removal of outdated information that may confuse the end user.
Action 3: IATS will deploy a work order system to capture and document all incoming requests for technology services
Action 4: IATS will create a flowchart to illustrate how requests for service should be triaged and directed in order to increase efficiency
Action 5: IATS will develop an Outreach Plan to guide our targeted communication to the user community.
2. Strategy 2: IATS will make a commitment to on-going professional development for its staff
Expected outcomes: The purpose of this strategy is to equip IATS staff with technical skills necessary to manage and administer the complexities of a modern IT organization in Higher education. 2
Action 1: IATS management and staff will actively engage in the development of technical and administrative skills to broaden IATS overall decision making capabilities.
Action 2: IATS will participate in collaborative professional development opportunities with other PASSHE Institutions
Action 3: Members of IATS will participate in and/or join professional organizations, including attending conferences that benefit the University and or IATS
3. Strategy 3: IATS will improve overall faculty, student and staff computing experience
Expected Outcomes: This strategy is intended to improve IATS communication, interaction and response time to technical issues that affect the university community
Action 1: IATS will work with the campus community to implement a Service Level Agreement
Action 2: IATS will develop and follow a technology replacement plan both in the teaching spaces and in administrative offices
Action 3: IATS will implement the 1st phase of SysAid work order system by May, 2012
Action 4: IATS will facilitate and coordinate improvements to the ResNet by fall 2013
Action 5: IATS will conduct annual customer satisfaction survey for Students
Action 6: IATS will conduct annual customer satisfaction survey for Faculty & Staff
4. Strategy 4: IATS will initiate an identity management project
Expected Outcomes: This strategy will allow IATS to create accurate record of SRU affiliates who have access to computing resources
Action 1: IATS will launch a project to match faculty and staff with their group attributes
(room numbers, building, department, office, college and division)
Action 2: IATS will launch a federated identity initiative 3
Action 3: IATS will create a project plan that will ultimately lead to participating in Chibboleth
Action 4: IATS will join Chibboleth (Date??)
5. Strategy 5 IATS will develop a systematic data storage approach
Expected Outcomes:
Action 1: IATS will explore and follow through on outsourcing of student email
Action 2: IATS will explore and follow through on using SharePoint in lieu of individually shared computer folders
Action 3: IATS will improve the performance of SharePoint if we are going to continue to use it for our calendars
Action 4: IATS will review all Enterprise Storage for capacity and disaster recovery purposes. This action will include a thorough exploration of off-site storage for backup
Action 5: IATS will review current storage quota strategy for users and increase if possible
6. Strategy 6: IATS will launch an information security initiative
Expected Outcomes: IATS will raise information security awareness among technology users while strengthening physical and data security
Action 1: IATS will coordinate and facilitate an annual information security audit
Action 2: IATS will organize information security sessions to raise user awareness
Action 3: IATS will explore and follow through on a data encryption method (drive, folder, file)
Action 4: IATS will perform a review and document the existing enterprise environment, including networking and server farm
Action 5: IATS will engage Oracle for database security discovery
Action 6: IATS will institute physical security measures 4
Action 7: IATS will work with Environmental Health and Safety to install fire suppression in data center
Action 8: IATS will work to attain stable power & cooling in Maltby, Spotts, ATSH, & Vincent
7. Strategy 7: IATS will maintain a stable computing environment
Expected Outcomes: This strategy is intended to allow IATS to remain current with stable hardware, software releases and updates available
Action 1: IATS will develop and follow an annual upgrade path for mission critical systems
Action 2: IATS will continue documenting our projects on the networking calendar.
Action 3: IATS will develop and follow a technology replacement plan both in the teaching spaces and in administrative offices
Action 5: IATS will explore and follow through on software distribution, management and metering tools
Action 6: IATS will deploy a software metering tool to quantify software and hardware usage in the labs.
Action 7: IATS will deploy a VPN platform to manage off-campus user access into SRU computing resources
Action 8: IATS will complete migration from Mainframe to Banner and other modernized tools and applications, including faculty evaluation tool, course scanning mechanism and the scoring of computer competency test
Action 9: IATS will work with PASSHE to deploy an SAP interface to replace the BO11 screen, which is used to view personnel information on the mainframe
8. Strategy 8: IATS will foster a culture of innovation
Expected Outcomes: This strategy will afford IATS the opportunity to partner with other offices on campus as early as the discussion phase of the all projects that may have technology implications 5
Action 1: IATS will coordinate and facilitate the growth of the local KINBER/PenREN service node
Action 2: IATS will explore and follow through on a mobile Banner Application
Action 3: IATS management team will work with Academic resources to create a lunch room in Maltby Center
Action 4: IATS will review the utilization of its work areas for better utilization and efficiency.
Action 5: IATS will automate the student worker scheduling process for more accurate time and record keeping
Action 6: IATS will advocate for the creation of a cost center for IATS only expenses and a separate cost center for campus wide IT Initiatives.
