Retention and Graduation rates are calculated using entering First-Time, Full-Time Freshmen cohorts (groups). Cohort headcounts are adjusted later for allowable exclusions (such as military reasons, religious reasons, service in the Peace Corps, or are deceased) for the fall semester.

Common performance metrics include second year persistence rate (continuation from entering fall semester to the next fall semester), 4 year graduation rate (students completing within four years), and 6 year graduation rate (students completing within six years).
