Art: Early Childhood Education

This minor is designed to provide early childhood education majors at SRU with the option of a specialization in art with an emphasis on translating studio experiences into the elementary classroom. The minor provides the student with an overview of and orientation to studio experience that will serve as the framework from which to teach art to elementary students. Advanced topics in Art Education course links studio art experiences to curriculum development using Discipline Based Art Education. As part of the course work, students will observe in a variety of educational settings. Students attend a one-hour conference per week (non-credit) during the semesters that they take studio art classes.

Students choosing this minor learn how to incorporate art into their elementary classroom in order to improve, complement and enhance children's educational experiences. The curriculum provides students with the opportunity to gain communication, technical and design skills while building a portfolio.

What Will You Learn?

The minor provides the student with an overview of and orientation to studio experience that will serve as the framework from which to teach art. Students simultaneously learn art production, art criticism, art history and aesthetics. One course focuses specifically upon children's artistic stages of development, their needs, and how best to help them grow creatively, technically and personally.
