Chemistry Majors Make a Difference

Pass on your passion for chemistry to the next generation of bright students.

Chemistry BS

Offered by: Chemistry

Slippery Rock University's Chemistry major prepares students for careers as chemists through a demanding, proven, and integrated program. Chemistry majors receive hands-on experience with modern technology in our laboratories and work closely with faculty to conduct research. They even present their findings at national meetings across the country. Upon graduation, students are ready to enter the job market directly or to continue their education in a graduate or professional program.

Why Major in Chemistry?

At SRU, our curriculum provides you with the fundamental knowledge of the major fields of chemistry. You'll take classes designed to strengthen your understanding of organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and bio chemistry, creating a firm foundation upon which to specialize your bachelor's degree.

Your lecture and laboratory courses will take place in updated facilities with small class sizes, taught by faculty who are committed to individualized interaction. You'll conduct experiments that will give you experience with current synthetic and analytical techniques and have opportunities to use a wide variety of instruments.

What Will You Learn?

SRU's program is certified by the American Chemical Society and will provide you with a broad-based and rigorous chemistry education. Our intensive program includes introductory, foundational, and in-depth coursework in chemistry and chemistry-related fields, including calculus, general physics, and lab work. Specific classes include Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Polymer Chemistry.

Students also research a current topic of their choosing under the direction of a faculty supervisor. This project culminates in an ACS-style written report, giving majors real-world experience.

Careers, Clubs, and Internships

The job opportunities for graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry are varied and some require additional coursework in given areas.
