Budget suggestions: April 4, 2014

I know it was shot down by the Trustees, but I would like to see the parking permit process changed. I believe that not only should the fees be raised to a level comperable to other PASSE schools, but students that live at apartment complexes that are within 2 miles of campus and served by the happy bus should be banned from buying parking passes. Too many students from these apartment complexes drive to class, which takes away spots from legit commuters. There is not a lack of parking spots, there is simply not a way to give them to the students that need them. This is where the change needs to be made.

I think that we can utilize the Smith Center and host some events for high school students. This will get them to see the beauty of the SRU campus and get them interested about coming here for their education. I think too many high school students are unaware of how nice SRU is.

Set the automatic setting on all campus printers to be double sided. Currently, this must be selected manually by the student, and it is not even available on some of the printes in some computer labs. This was not the case when I attended Pitt, the default was double sided. Imagine the sheer amount of paper that this would save. I would have to think it would reduce student's paper usage by 30-40%. This would not only save money, but it would have a large environmental impact as well. Also, the printing pricing system will charge you an extra sheet if you print an odd number of pages double sided.

As I shared with you earlier this year in my State of the University address, we started the fiscal year with a $5.2 million structural budget deficit.  Through the efforts of many people, we were able to present the trustees with a balanced budget.

So, how’d we do it?
