Budget suggestions: September 9, 2013

Consider offering summer experiences such as field experiences, international travel, service-learning experiences, etc which are not offered elsewhere and that will recruit students other than those at SRU. For example, Arcadia and Butler Universities generate huge revenue (mostly discretionary funds!) from non-Butler students for its study abroad programs. If these offerings are well done, SRU may secure additional traditional students based on our summer experiences reputation. Get ahead of the curve! Review demographic and employment trends and develop academic programming that addresses the 2015-25 world. Choose programming that is not being offered by other PASSHE and regional universities. Engage employers in emerging fields in the development of curriculum to ensure professional competencies are being met. No strategy will make much difference unless we market, market, market! Prospective students need to know about the edge they can get at SRU. We've got to tell our story and toot our own horn about what we offer that is better than and different than the 'run of the mill' university!

As I shared with you earlier this year in my State of the University address, we started the fiscal year with a $5.2 million structural budget deficit.  Through the efforts of many people, we were able to present the trustees with a balanced budget.

So, how’d we do it?
